#765 Badge Idea found a bug
Opened 4 years ago by ausil. Modified 2 years ago

Badge description (like "You added a co-maintainer to a package. BFF!"):
I found a bug in badges

Help the badges team understand what this idea is all about. If this badge is
awarded for certain kinds of activities:

1) What are those activities?
reporting an accepted bug in badges

2) Who is doing them (are they packagers? translators? newcomers? veterans?
users? sponsors?)
everyone

3) Why are they doing them (is this a means to a different end?)
making badges better

4) When do they do them (every day? once a year?)
all the time

5) How do they do them (by talking in IRC? by running commands in the console?
by using a web interface?)
filing a bug here that is accepted for a defect

Lastly, do you have any ideas for artwork concepts?
Sorry I do not

@preshy21 Hey. When I first saw this badge idea, I thought the artwork concept should be a cute ladybug, similar to the cute spider in the Web Warrior badge and shown in @gnokii's art.
What do you think @riecatnor ?

Thought about that too
Infact I tried drawing a bug multiple times , I will create something with
the spiders shortly , was looking for the pagure link
Thanks Viv , will redo it

@preshy21 You should wait to see what @riecatnor thinks before jumping in :)

@preshy21 would you like to collaborate on this?
I have an idea using the ladybug you and @viv mentioned.
If you'd like to I can DM you what I've been working on ( I've been doing it just for fun, so no pressure  )

Yes, Please
Let's collaborate

@preshy21 graciously allowed me to upload my work -
I worked off of the idea she and @viv mentioned of a ladybug - and added the police hat for the 'report' side of things.
I'm not sure how well it goes with the tagline, though - I might be way off .
I also strayed from the colour palettes a bit - turns out ladybugs don't look like ladybugs in grey.
If it is a good direction to go in your opinion, @riecatnor , then Preshy will be working on the adjustments to the design, as needed.

Thanks for collaborating @Ella , I think the bugs looks cute, but just like you said , I will wait for @riecatnor to drop her feedback , so that I can work on the adjustments if any.
thank you

Hi everyone! Nice work so far :)

Let's look at the concept a little bit closer: Found a bug in badges.

I don't think our bug will be on patrol ;) The concept would be more a panda finding a bug? Or a badge graphic inside the badge, with a bug and a magnifying glass? Here are a couple bug related badges.. maybe the art can be built from one or more of these. https://badges.fedoraproject.org/badge/web-warrior
https://pagure.io/fedora-badges/issue/491#comment-445957

Thank you
For the insight @riecatnor , I will work with this

Hello @riecatnor , this is a redesign , I have edited and I think this explains what you have in mind,
please drop a review when you can , thank you
ladybugbadge.png

Hello @ooree are you trying to collaborate on this ticket or are they suggestions I should implement?
Well, if yes, I feel your edits looks cool by the way , so I would wait for @riecatnor to share her thoughts .

Hi @preshy21 I was making a contribution, not making suggestions for you to implement. However, I am open to collaborations. I saw the ticket was dormant for a few days, that's why I picked it up.

Hi @ooree @preshy21 nice work! I think @preshy21 design is closer to the concept I had in mind. Maybe you both an experiment using that file moving forward. (this file: https://pagure.io/fedora-badges/issue/765#comment-698704 )

Here are two more badges that include bugs:
https://badges.fedoraproject.org/badge/common-bugs-contributor
https://badges.fedoraproject.org/badge/corporate-drone

  • I think the simplicity of the bug from "common bugs contributor" would work well for this. Try using a simpler bug, or even copy the one from common bugs contributor.
  • I think we could get a simpler design by cropping in a little bit. See the composition in this badge: https://badges.fedoraproject.org/badge/neurofedora-sig-member

Hope that helps! Looking forward to the next drafts :)

Thanks @riecatnor , I will do an edit and submit now

@preshy21 @riecatnor Hey! I did not see this badge idea in the "Issues" when I opened a similar ticket [0]. This is a great idea and much needed within the Fedora QA community. Thank you for your work on this. I would like to add some feedback for the general idea of this ticket that I think will improve the whole thing:

It is not uncommon to find bugs within Fedora and I know people value receiving badges for their work within Fedora, so I would like to ask that this be changed from one single badge that a user would receive for their contribution to a series of badges that a user could acquire over time spent reporting bugs in Fedora. I know I have personally reported many tens of bugs over the years and a single badge for reporting one bug would have slipped my mind a long time ago, but having something to look forward to/work toward would be advantageous in rewarding users for their contributions and potentially keep them coming back for more.

What are your thoughts here?

[0] https://pagure.io/fedora-badges/issue/769

Hello, @coremodule @riecatnor , I just checked out the badges @camiarias designed in ticket 769 , it is really beautiful, I think it is very similar to this, I just have a question, should I continue working on this ticket or are we going to make use of the one @camiarias designed.
or can you review the ticket with a related issue for me to work on .
Thanks, I would really appreciate

@ whoever works on this badge moving forward, use the file from this comment: https://pagure.io/fedora-badges/issue/765#comment-698704 and make a couple small changes. We also want to make this badge a series for opening multiple bug reports over time. I think we could do 1, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100.

Notes on the art for clarity:

Hi @gulnart thanks for starting work on this badge! There is some badge artwork that exists already for this that just needs some editing, source here: https://pagure.io/fedora-badges/issue/765#comment-698705

A note to move forward:
- Download the source file and apply the changes from this comment: https://pagure.io/fedora-badges/issue/765#comment-723450

Also, please review this page for some background on designing Fedora Badges:

Looking forward to your next draft! :)

Hey @riecatnor , I was going through the badges issues and as i have time, i thought maybe i could start working on this one too? I have gone through the resources you have provided
I have something like this in my mind like a panda looking through the magnifying glass at the bug and I would like to contribute to this too!

bug.png
bug.svg

Hey @riecatnor , I couldn't sleep :p so i tried something with this too!
I tried putting in everything you mentioned in the comments before, took the bug from the common bugs contributor badge, I could not find the other provided badge's svg files
Looking forward to your feedbacks!

I was just reviewing my work and i thought i missed the background. Here's an iteration with the added background from the background template:

Hi Everyone! I made some changes to the existing badge artwork. I edited the background color to the new fedora blue and a lighter green, because the previous color blue didnt match the Fedora Color Palette neither the extended one.

I tried different pandas to play with the color and used a simplifly versión of lady bugs and the common bug in different drafts, to have other options and see how it looks like. Looking foward to your feedback! @riecatnor

Hello everyone! Thanks for all the work here :) comments below

@swast1 nice work! A couple notes for you:
- I like how you cropped the panda, very cute!
- I am not sure about the magenta for the bugs? can you try some different colors? perhaps grey, or even the maroon from the badges extended palette?
- The text is a bit hard to read, try to style it this: https://badges.fedoraproject.org/badge/egg
- The exported pngs look incorrect.. there isn't enough space around the badge. Make sure you are using the templates and exporting the page at 256x256 pixels

@dhairya15 these are cute! I have a couple recommendations:
- Try to simplify the ladybug design a bit so it is more readable. The small ones will be small, but the biggest one should be very clear. I would remove some of the dots, and enlarge the ones you keep. Add a stroke as well
- Give a bit of space between the magnifying glass and the right edge of the badge design
- Use comfortaa for the typeface, and style your text like this:
https://badges.fedoraproject.org/badge/egg
- I would also choose a different color for the text, green on green is blending in

Hi @agusf nice start here :) A couple notes for you:
- The light blue is ok to use, it is in the extended palette
- simplify your ladybug, same as I advised Dhairya above. Remove some dots, and enlarge the ones you keep. Add a stroke. I would also enlarge the lady bug
- Try cropping the bottom of the panda off to give yourself more space for the bugs
- Style your text like this, and I would change to a diff color because the green is blending in with the green of the badge: https://badges.fedoraproject.org/badge/egg

Looking forward to the next drafts!

Greetings people!
Thank you @riecatnor for the reviews, I have updated my work according to them.
Is there any size description for the borders of numbers and texts? Earlier I made it like the egg-badge but the stroke size was not appropriate. I think I have over come that issue, but I need your feedback on it

Hi Everyone!
Thanks for the feedback @riecatnor! I have updated the badge taking into account everything you mentioned in the review. Sorry for saying the bright blue wasn’t in the extended palette, I must have downloaded an outdated version of the Fedora Badges Style Guide. I simplified the ladybug and added the stroke but I'm not sure about the size of the numbers. Maybe they should be a bit smaller?

P.S. I kept the orange panda :)

Hi, I was thinking of using the detective panda along with simple bugs, do you like that concept or would you like me to rework the previous versions on the lines of a panda + magnifying glass + bug? @smeragoel

Hi @anoushkad you are welcome to try either or both! Looking forward to your draft :)

Hi @anoushkad! Here are a couple of suggestions:

  • Hmm, I think the detective panda doesn't seem to fit here. He seems more like an indoor panda rather than an outdoorsy, bug-catching panda lol. Maybe you can experiment with the other pandas!

  • The bugs do need to be bigger and more prominent. The badges are really small, so any small designs won't be legible.

  • The transparent box could also be bigger and more prominent. Maybe try adding more net-like lines to it, so that it seems like a cage?

  • Overall, I think that this version doesn't really convey the badge concept really well. We can look up some bug-catching images for inspiration! Like this https://www.pixtastock.com/illustration/51344717 or maybe this: https://dribbble.com/shots/4180323-Bug-tracking/attachments/10245626?mode=media

  • When exporting your design, make sure you are exporting a 256x256 'Page' and not a drawing.

Looking forward to your next drafts!

Hi @anoushkad some notes for you:
- Make sure you are using the badge templates. Open the template you want, click File-> Save As and rename appropriately. Import any designs you have already created into that file. Don't make any changes to the template graphics.
- Let's revisit the concept for this badge: "found a bug in badges". This is for someone who files a bug report for the badges website. Maybe the art could be a panda looking at a badge (like it was on a wall) and it has a bug on it?

  • If you continue with the current art concept, I think you can simplify this further keeping in mind that this is a series and the badge art will probably get more busy as the series increases.
  • To gain more space, I would crop out most of the panda and put it in the bottom left corner.
  • Your bug has a nice shape, but all the colors are sorta blending together. Take a look at some of the other bug designs that are already used in badges, they are simple, and there is contrast between the fill and the stroke. Try to make it as simple as possible while still conveying what the bug is.
    https://badges.fedoraproject.org/badge/corporate-shill
    https://badges.fedoraproject.org/badge/web-warrior
  • The "1" is placed in a way that brings a lot of attention to it- although we want people to know which badge is which, this shouldn't be the focus of the badge. Once you work on the composition, see if you can find a more subtle placement for that.

Thanks @anoushkad, looking forward to whats next!

Hi @anoushkad some notes for you:
- Once you figure out your badge template issues, please use the correct template
- I would recommend simplifying your bug even further and making it a bit larger- maybe choose a different color than red as well, since we don't use that very commonly in badges
- Try to smooth out and simplify the design of the bug catcher
- Try a different set of colors for your numbering, the pink against the blue has a lot of contrast and the two colors "vibrate" against each other
- I think the top left of the badge is looking kind of empty now.. I would recommend readjusting the composition again- remove the "1" and arrange the objects (panda, net, bug) in a pleasing composition. Once you have done that, add the "1" back in
Looking forward to what's next!

hi @riecatnor i improved on what @anoushkad did,
i added a sun at the background,
a cloud effect to the sky
improved on the net
the eyes of the panda and the finger tips were also improved
the lady bug were improved too. pls check it out.
bug_finder.png

Hi folks, thanks for starting work on this badge! I would give you both the same advice:
- The badge designs are quite busy, I would try to simplify instead of add more to the design
- I think the design that has gotten the closest is the one in [this comment(https://pagure.io/fedora-badges/issue/765#comment-731223).. I think the red ladybug is kind of harsh color wise.. Its super bright and vibrates against the blue of the sky. I wonder if we could tone the red down and that might solve this one?

@meghasharma I like it! I think the red is a bit cool toned and slightly more towards pink. Try making it more warm toned. Here's a graphic which explains it nicely I think: https://justpaint.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/Figure-3_web.jpg
Let's make the red more warm toned, then I think we should be done!

@dejipot I think the ladybugs are blending in with the net and don't stand out. Let's stick to more bright colours. I like the idea of looking into colours other than red. Maybe purples, oranges and red? Something that would pop out against the background!

@falyne The panda hands seem out of proportions to the body. I also think that the net could have a thicker and more defined stroke. The ladybugs are also very small, badges are viewed at a small scale so the smaller details won't be legible. As @riecatnor mentioned https://pagure.io/fedora-badges/issue/765#comment-846509, the design in one of the previous comments is close and we just want to play around with the colours.

@riecatnor @smeragoel Thanks for the feedback. I worked upon it and have warm toned the colour of ladybug, it isn't as harsh toned as the original one and nor as cool toned as my previous work, lies in between them. Let me know if any change is required.

bug1.pngbug1.svgbug5.pngbug5.svgbug10.pngbug10.svgbug25.pngbug25.svgbug50.pngbug50.svgbug100.pngbug100.svg

Hi folks, nice work here :100: feedback below!

@meghasharma notes for you:
- I think there is something off with the template.. please do adhere to that, making no changes, and make sure you are exporting correctly
- I think you can make some small adjustment on the arm holding the magnifying glass.. it looks bent and angular, make that a bit rounder by simplifying the vectors and creating a rounded elbow
- I would suggest making the green grass area slightly lighter, it is a bit bright and clashing where it meets the blue sky
- You have also made the "1" badge with just one ladybug, and then jump immediately to a bunch for the other numbers.. maybe add one or two at a time? I think 25 and 50 can be the same since there is only so much space to add more bugs in such a small space
- I also noticed you changed the shocked sad face to a happy face.. design wise, its okay, but I think finding a bug isn't something so happy.. so I would go with a neutral face or revert back to the sad face

@dejipot notes for you:
- I don't mind a purple bug, but then it is less of a ladybug and more of a beetle.. which is okay, I think you might remove the spots tho.. I would also suggest adding a stroke onto the bug to make it stand out a bit more
- I would give a similar recommendation as above, to change the green grass area to a bit of a lighter green as it is harsh where it meets the blue sky
- I would also recommend to you to work on the elbow area which looks a bit angular, work on rounding that out to look more natural

@falyne notes for you:
- You changed to yellow, nice! I would give you similar advice, to remove the spots and make it a beetle instead of a ladybug
- I would give a similar recommendation as above, to change the green grass area to a bit of a lighter green as it is harsh where it meets the blue sky
- The numbering seems to be a bit off, make sure to keep the layers stacked on top of each other

Looking forward to next drafts!

hi @riecatnor thanks for the feedback i adjusted the layers and made the color of the grass lighter

Hi @riecatnor @smeragoel! As said in feedback, I've adjusted the arm and made it rounder, added gradient in grass so it doesn't look flat and made it lighter, adjusted quantity of bugs accordingly and lastly changed the expression from a happy one to shocked one. I've tried exporting the template as it is. Let me know if the issue still persists in template :sad

Hey folks, thanks for the work here! Feedback below :100:

@falyne wow, I really like the version with the grass blades! Let's move forward with that one :relaxed: Notes for you:
- The grass looks really nice, but I think its looking a tiny bit unnatural on the right side.. I can see the bottom of the grass objects. I would suggest experimenting with that side (placement, and where the grass blades are in relation to the other objects (in front, behind)) and make sure you are using the "Clip" tool to keep it inside the badge design area.
- No other notes, so once you make the changes to the grass, you can create the other designs in the series

Hi @meghasharma nice improvements! Some small notes for you:
- The arm is improved, but it looks a bit slender now compare to the one on the left.. I think you can make that a bit fluffier
- The change of color for the grass is great! Try adding some variation to the horizon line so it looks more natural, maybe a small hill or something? Right now it is totally straight and looks a bit stiff

Hi @dejipot also looking really good, nice work! Notes for you:
- I would give you the same recommendations I gave in the comments for meghasharma:
- The arm is improved, but it looks a bit slender now compare to the one on the left.. I think you can make that a bit fluffier, especially in the shoulder area and upper arm (bicep area)
- The change of color for the grass is great! Try adding some variation to the horizon line so it looks more natural, maybe a small hill or something? Right now it is totally straight and looks a bit stiff
- Make sure you are centering the numbering well in the space you have.. the 1 looks ok, but the others are closer to the edge of the design area than the panda.. you might want to reduce the size a little bit so it fits in there nicely

Looking forward to your next drafts!

hi @riecatnor I made some changes concerning the review, I reduced the number of fonts and also adjusted the elbow, I made reference to falyne idea and included grass in the badge also, and I adjusted the opacity of the grass to a lesser distracting tone
bug_50.svgbug_50.pngbug_25.pngbug_25.svgbug_10.pngbug_10.svgbug_5.svgbug_5.pngbug_1.pngbug_1.svg

Hi @riecatnor @smeragoel! Working upon the feedback, I've adjusted the right arm, taking reference from @/falyne's design, I've included a bit of grass. I've also added gradient to the brown path and the backdrop field. Moreover I felt that since there is a lot going on the lower half of the badge design, I removed the sunlight strokes from the sky to give it a simpler feel. Let me know what do you think of this version?
