#639 Overwatch - You fixed a release-monitoring filter.
Opened 5 years ago by abitrolly. Modified a year ago

Badge description (like "You added a co-maintainer to a package. BFF!"):
You fixed a release-monitoring filter. w00t!"

Help the badges team understand what this idea is all about. If this badge is
awarded for certain kinds of activities:

1) What are those activities?
- watching for error in release monitoring - https://release-monitoring.org/projects/updates/failed

2) Who is doing them (are they packagers? translators? newcomers? veterans?
users? sponsors?)
- users, packagers, newcomers

3) Why are they doing them (is this a means to a different end?)
- to check newer versions of package. to request new versions automatically, to receive notifications

4) When do they do them (every day? once a year?)
- when interested in a new version of a package, it is worthy to check that release monitoring is not broken

5) How do they do them (by talking in IRC? by running commands in the console?
by using a web interface?)
- using https://release-monitoring.org/ edit form

Lastly, do you have any ideas for artwork concepts?
- watch is a debian mechanism, overwatch can be fought as the next step, someone who stands in the night and watches that things are running smoothly, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_Watch_(Discworld)

@abitrolly since it literally says Overwatch, how would you feel about using some graphic elements or details from the game in the badge?

@mleonova I they don't mind, I think it is a great idea. )

Hi @riecatnor @mleonova @abitrolly

For the first concept, I took @mleonova 's idea of an Overwatch character. I didn't know of the game, so I had to do research for this. It turns out that the game has many characters, and it was hard to pick one. I decided to go with Widowmaker, because she has a head-gear with red dots, which sort of look like eyes, giving more meaning to the word "overwatch".

For the second option, I use an owl, with the large eyes and nocturnal character, making it ideal for "night watch" and also "overwatch".

Hi @viv this is sweet! I think if we are able to adapt a character from the game, we should make it a Fedora version, like the Widowmaker Panda LOL I love the art you made tho! Really cool. I think we are going to have to avoid it for potential copyright issues with Overwatch.

I like the owl idea! A couple things to help it fit guidelines:
- make the owl smaller, fit the entire graphic inside the graphic area
- maybe give the owl some environment, like a branch, maybe a moon?
- I am not sure on this white stroke, try with a dark stroke, or maybe even a light gray if it needs to be light

Looking forward to your next draft :) thanks!

I like the idea of Owl watching over release-monitoring. )

I'd prefer light version with feather stripes on wings. :D

However, taking another iteration, I think about merging or stylizing the Owl with Overwatch may still play out well. Widowmaker may be hard to blend, because it's red dots are too cyberpunk, but Tracer glasses, haircut (and maybe attitude) looks manageable. At the very least she is in same brown and yellow colors. )

Looking at https://release-monitoring.org/ I thought that there was more dark blue colors there. Now I see that it mostly gray, light blue and pink. I don't think there should be an association with the web site scheme. Just thought about it a little.

Hi @viv very nice!! I like the last one best as well. We do our best to avoid using black (even as outlines), can you change those for the dark options in the extended color palette? Also the light blue of it's eyes are getting lost on the white. Try to options: a different color for the eye, or giving the whole eye a stroke to mimic the natural eyeliner. Thanks!!

@abitrolly I think mixing the two ideas will create confusion in the design, and @viv's owl is great :D

Hi @viv nice improvements! A couple things

Almost there, thanks for your work! :)

@viv so cute! I like the first (overwatch7).

I think the outlines keep getting switched around.. see suggestions below
- outline of owl should be dark brown
- outline of trunk should be dark brown
- out of leaves should be green

Can you try to simplify the moon just a little bit? Take out a couple of the dots :)

Thanks!
