#636 Discourse Badge for Badges
Opened 6 years ago by riecatnor. Modified a year ago

Badge description (like "You added a co-maintainer to a package. BFF!"):
- badge series for earning badges on discourse https://www.discourse.org/
- three different levels - earning certain number of copper, silver, and gold discourse badges

Help the badges team understand what this idea is all about. If this badge is
awarded for certain kinds of activities:

1) What are those activities?
- earning badges on discourse website

2) Who is doing them (are they packagers? translators? newcomers? veterans?
users? sponsors?)
- everyone!

3) Why are they doing them (is this a means to a different end?)
- trying/commenting/using web based discussion platform https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/

4) When do they do them (every day? once a year?)
- all the time!

5) How do they do them (by talking in IRC? by running commands in the console?
by using a web interface?)
- through doing things on fedora discourse https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/

Lastly, do you have any ideas for artwork concepts?
- Series of badges... 1, 5, 10, 15, 25 badges earned on discourse for copper/silver/gold
- Crow bringing shiny badges into a nest. Adding more and more badges for increasing quantity of badges earned

Hi @riecatnor @smeragoel, I've worked on this badge series

Hey @anoushkad @bhavya-verma @designstacks! Great work on the badges; here is some feedback for everyone:

Looking forward to seeing what you folks come up with next!

Hi @riecatnor @smeragoel I tried making some improvements by removing the minute details of the badge. Moreover, I added similar badges for Copper and Silver. Here's how they look

Hey @riecatnor, would love to work on this ticket again! Would need some feedback for the next set of iterations... 😄

Hi @bhavya-verma thanks for the follow up- and I'd love for you to continue work on this series! Here's some feedback for you:
- The feel of the crow illustration is nice, but could use at a small size is a bit hard to read.. try changing the colors a bit, try using variations of darker/lighter greys to see if you can make it more legible. Thicken up the legs/feet as they are very small and hard to see currently
- We try our best to avoid black in badge designs (crows are black, so i think some black for that makes sense), so for the outlines on the other objects, try darker versions of whatever color the object is: dark green, dark brown, etc.
- The coins are hard to see, and blend together.. there is a nice coin design in badges already, maybe you can adapt that or use it for reference.. It is a bit too detailed for this instance, but the contrast and simplicity is nice.. check it out here: https://badges.fedoraproject.org/badge/fedora-treasurer
- The background seems to mismatch the design in front in its current state.. I would suggest playing around with it.. maybe try making it only a blue sky, and tonight down the rays in the background? Or maybe try a version with a patterned background instead of an illustrated background?

Looking forward to the next draft!

Hi @sahibbassey thanks for starting work on this ticket! I think I gave some feedback during the office hours, but I will add notes here for the record :)

  • The bird is maybe a bit too light now? If it supposed to be a crow, I think you can subtly achieve that by using a mixture of light grey/medium gray/some black
  • The feet are blending into the branch
  • The nest has a lot of details, that are difficult to see at a small size.. simplify that by reducing the number of twigs and bumps you have on it
  • Make sure to use comfortaa for the typeface
  • Work on making the leaves look a bit more natural (right now they look like some smooth candy or bean ;))
  • The coins are nice, but the details on them are getting lost at this size. Remove the illustration inside, and simplify the design as much as possible

Looking forward to your next draft!

Hi @riecatnor made all necessary changes for this ticket as you noted, will like your review, they include:
- Using the light grey/medium gray/some black for the crow
- Made the leaves more natural
- The branch is now more realistic
- Removed the illustration from the coin
- Used comfortaa type face
- Reduced the twigs on the nest
- The feet is now very visible

Looking forward to your review, thank you.

Hi @sahibbassey nice improvements here :grinning: notes for you:
- The darker color is definitely looking more crow like, but maybe its a bit too dark? Try "2a2a2aff" for the value and see how that looks
- I think you have done a nice job making the branch and leaves look more natural than before, tho I think you can work on them a bit more.. There might be the case that there are too many nodes on your vector objects.. We want the designs to look natural, but cartoonish and simple.
- Make sure you are using the "Clip" tool for the left side of the branch.. I can see the stroke and I think it can just be cropped so it looks like its coming from off the page
- I would suggest making the coins a bit bigger and giving them a stroke (1.5 pixel or more) to help them stand out. I would suggest using a similar stroke across the whole design
- I think you can simplify the number of nodes you have on the crow as well.. you can achieve a lot of control with a small number of nodes  for example the eyes don't look like a perfect oval, I think it is because there are extra nodes. When you are in the node editing mode on inkscape there are buttons at that top that will help you gain more control over the shapes ("Make selected nodes smooth" "Make selected nodes corner", etc). Try to use as little nodes as you can to achieve the shape you want

Looking forward to your next draft!
