#622 Kernel Test Day participant badge
Closed: pushed 8 months ago by gui1ty. Opened 5 years ago by sumantrom.

Badge description (like "You added a co-maintainer to a package. BFF!"):

Something similar to this for Kernel Test Day. We keep having Kernel Test Day every 10 weeks with ~70 contributor participating.

Help the badges team understand what this idea is all about. If this badge is
awarded for certain kinds of activities:

1) What are those activities?

Participating in Kernel Test Days

2) Who is doing them (are they packagers? translators? newcomers? veterans?
users? sponsors?)
-
QA Contributors

3) Why are they doing them (is this a means to a different end?)

To make sure the new kernel is supporting and nothing fails regression

4) When do they do them (every day? once a year?)

Every Kernel Test Day hosted by Fedora QA Team

5) How do they do them (by talking in IRC? by running commands in the console?
by using a web interface?)
-
Running commands in console

Lastly, do you have any ideas for artwork concepts?

@sumantrom great idea! @mleonova and I reviewed this and have a few ideas for artwork.

One idea would be to remix this badge: https://badges.fedoraproject.org/badge/f28-i18n-test-day-participant changing the graphics on the computer screen to something kernel related.

Second idea would be to remix this badge: https://badges.fedoraproject.org/badge/science-kernel-tester-i taking out the numbers/changing colour ring/maybe give the badger a name tag

@kavishapd I like the second one! (TestDay2) Can you try one with a lighter background? Thanks

@sumantrom WDYT?

I selected a dark color to match with the usual dark background of kernels but I guess it hinders other elements in the badge . How about these? :) @riecatnor

@riecatnor The Test Week is underway and we would love to award this badge to all the folks who participated. Can this be pushed and Award rights to be given to me?

A summary of what needs to be done for the design:
- Improve the artwork in this comment(the option with the blue background) by playing with the test tube on the screen. Currently, it looks a bit distorted (too wide).
- Try different colors for the liquid in the test tube- tho I think green would be nice
- Try a dark grey stroke on the test tube - the dark blue is sticking out instead of blending nicely with the other colors in the design.

@riecatnor , thanks for all the mentoring. Can we have this done by this release cycle? I have a lot of badge ideas, I will file issues for them soon.

@sumantrom that would be great. What date do you need it by? We are about to start the outreachy intern applicant period for a fedora badge design intern. It would be great for them to work on this easy fix sort of task, but if you need it really soon, let me know and I can make the edits!

I would need them by F39 which is releasing November. Sometime between now and November, so I can allot them during test days. This badge specifically, can be done in a series like participating in 1 kernel test day, 5 kernel test days and 10 and 15 and 20 and 25 for now. That way we don't have to edit the fedora version and still keep giving the badges

Cool, thank you for the update. We can definitely make that happen! If it isn't addressed by the outreachy applicants/intern, I can take care of it.

I wonder how you will track how many test days people have contributed to? It might be difficult to keep on top of that. What if we created badges for the next 6 releases, and then in a couple years, we can do that again? In the end its up to you how we approach it, but better to go with what's easiest for you as I am sure you are doing plenty of other things related to the test days!

Hello @riecatnor and @smeragoel ! I have modified the design according to your suggestions.

Hi @kavyaaaa nice start! I have a few pieces of feedback for you:
- Please upload both the PNGs and SVG files to the ticket when submitting artwork for badges. This helps everyone in the short and long term to provide support or go back to the work for whatever reason.
- These files are 209px by 209px, the exported files should be 256x256. Make sure you are using the templates and when you go to export, select "Page"
- I really like what you've done with the test tube! no notes on that :)
- We try to avoid the color black in badges when we can to help keep the color palette for badges light and fun.. sometimes it pops up in the badger designs and if a design has a full illustration. For this one, I think you can work with the original design coloring (here's the file). We have a lot of other badges with this design and it would be good to keep them consistent. That being said, I kind of like the contrast you've created.. try a version where you keep the original light grey scheme for the computer, and for the screen try a dark grey
- Since this is a Quality related badge, I think the green panda makes sense! Nice job on that

Looking forward to your next draft :)

Hi @riecatnor, I made sure the file is 256x256px and according to the template.

Hi @kavyaaaa nice work! Notes for you:
- I think there might be a small issue with the template still? The inner badge design area looks like it has been enlarged some
- I opened the svg and noticed the beaker is a bitmap, can you please redraw that using vectors?
- I think we want to make this a release specific badge. So let's add an "f38" into the badge, similar to this badge. I'd try variations on placement, it oculd be on the computer screen, but maybe above instead? experiment with this :)

Looking forward to your next draft

Hi @kavyaaaa this is looking great! The template looks better, too  One small note:
- I think the "f38" looks a little cramped (I checked out the svg, and it does look similar to the badge example I gave, so it's not a bad job!).. since we will soon be on to "f39" and "f40" (which will take even more space), I would suggest making that text a bit smaller to accommodate. Otherwise, looks great to me

I closed https://github.com/fedora-infra/tahrir/issues/459. Not sure if it relates to this badge request or to something else.

Bumping this since people are anxious for getting their badge.

@riecatnor it looks like none of the artwork has been approved yet. There has been some discussion going on regarding this badge. It appears to me it will have to be awarded manually. In that case I would prefer a generic badge without release in it, so it can be awarded regardless of release.

I'm available to push this badge and award it as soon as artwork has been approved.

Here's the art- the last iteration needed just a couple small adjustments. I think its probably good to include the release because it encourages people to do the activity for each release instead of only doing it once. I know badges aren't the end all, be all, for motivation :) but they help.

That being said- we might adjust this badge in the future to be in the quality section after we resolve how we want to work on mitigating the exponential number of event badges. I think that's a separate discussion and once we figure that out we can make adjustments to which categories various badges fall under and any adjustments needed to the artwork.

I will award the badge to people listed on the event page next.
