#54 Cheater Badge
Closed: Rejected None Opened 10 years ago by rstrode.

watching #fedora-fedmsg it's clear people are "gaming the system" to get badges (like editing a wiki page in a loop removing and adding a character).

I say reward them for their efforts with a Cheater badge.

This one seems a bit tricky to me; I can see trying to write an anti-cheat bot being a huge timesink, and being the Badges Cheating Cop would be a really thankless job I'm not sure anyone wants to do.

perhaps we need to take more of a social engineering approach to this and just trust people to be good if we get out the message that, hey, everyone should play nice and get their badges by legitimate means? just my initial thought on the issue.

The wiki one is the one that is easiest or most likely to be the one that people try to "cheat" at. Maybe the badge could be something like "cheetah"! and the decsription implies that they were either cheating or really fast at editing wiki pages.

Maybe the criteria could be edited the same wikipage 25 times in an hour.

ryan: there are legitimate cases for 25 edits in an hour; we use the wiki as a test case management system (I know, I know) so when we're doing release validation the pace of edits to the validation pages is super fast, and I've probably hit 25 edits an hour doing stuff like Common Bugs pages updates as well. see, even the simplest case of trying to write a cheatbot turns out not to be so simple :( I kinda like making it an 'ambiguous' badge like this though, if we're going to do it.

Set triaged to 'yes' for all tickets, as I've hit them all already.

just put types back in, we'll try and handle bugs here too, no new trac.

that is why i like the double meaning of cheetah / cheater. Either you are fast like a cheetah, or a cheater...

maybe also up it to 50 or 100 edits in an hour.

After some discussion on IRC about "negative badges" and the fact that this can very easily be abused, I thought of some rebranding!

At first I thought of separate cheetah badges for say X koji builds in one day, X commits in one day, X tagger actions in one day etc, but I felt that would create too many badges for categories that are already covered.

So how about the Productive Cheetah, who has done X (maybe 4?) of the following in one day!

3 wiki edits
50 tags on tagger
1 answer on Ask Fedora
3 successful koji builds
2 blog posts
1 participation in IRC meeting

These numbers are meant to reflect a roughly equal amount of time/effort for each category, but just guesstimates really.

Artwork might be a cheetah with a stopwatch dangling from it's mouth, further reinforcing the "speed" aspect of this badge.

okay since this badge is now more generic about speed of community participation i have a pink version. also, i'm afraid there isn't much room for a stopwatch but...

well i hope it isn't too http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_ekugPKqFw or look like explosive farts but i added lightning bolts instead, what do you think?

getting awarded a new badge for cheating, well that might even animate people more to cheat. Is the same like https://badges.fedoraproject.org/badge/dont-call-it-a-comeback how many people did set there account to inactive just to get it
