#432 I've been there
Opened 8 years ago by churchyard. Modified a year ago

Badge description: You've visited a Fedora booth at an event.

1) What are those activities?

Visiting Fedora booth at a conference/meetup/etc.

2) Who is doing them (are they packagers? translators? newcomers? veterans? users? sponsors?)

Anyone, but the main target here are newcomers.

3) Why are they doing them (is this a means to a different end?)

They want to get some swag. Now thay can also have a badge.

4) When do they do them (every day? once a year?)

Once per an event.

5) How do they do them (by talking in IRC? by running commands in the console? by using a web interface?)

By showing up in person.

I think we don't have the time and energy to create badges for all conferences where Fedora has a presence. On the other hand, I'm now on PyCon SK and lot of new potential contributors are showing up and asking interesting questions. If we could award them a badge, we can then see if they become active lately or not. (See https://networksfordata.wordpress.com/2016/03/08/fedora-at-fosdem/) My idea here is that we will have a general badge for events without a specific badge. We would need to protect the URL somehow (i.e. creating a specific URL before an event and disabling it after).

I still think this should lower the need for dozens of custom even badges.

Are there that many custom event badges every year? It seems in the past couple of months Ive been here there isn't that many. There's def. a flurry of design activity, that usually is like "We need this in 3 days!", but the few badges I updated seem to just need a number change.

That being said I think the idea of a newbie getting a "been there" badge is great. If custom badges were also made, it would mean they would get 2 for their first event.

Hey @booky! You can start working on this (and work on up to three issues simultaneously, without waiting for us to assign you an issue!)

All the best!

I think this would be a nice badge concept to pursue for any events we can't make custom badges for. What's needed:
- Remix the artwork from this badge into a design that represents visiting the booth.

Hi @riecatnor, where can I grab the SVG for this badge? Also, when you say remix, would you like this exact artwork modified, or is it okay to start "from scratch"?

Hi @rolandixor!

To find SVGs, you can go to the ticket of the badge (The link next to "Criteria") in the link you shared. There, you'll find a comment with the SVGs of the file.
Ticket Link: https://pagure.io/Fedora-Badges/issue/250
SVG Link: https://pagure.io/Fedora-Badges/issue/raw/8c1b2684a33d3d07b9839feea8e49e3ba9aff538f44952c9abc03a0471d75ece-the_panda_is_in.svg

(For really old tickets, the SVG links will throw an error. Remove /files from the URL and you will be good to go)

Remixing means you can take inspiration/artwork/resources from the old artwork. You are free to start from scratch if you have some ideas you want to pursue!

Happy designing :)

Hi @smeragoel,

Thank you for the guidance in finding the SVGs. Happy to jump in!

Hi @rolandixor thanks for starting work here. Some notes for you:
- I think right now your illustration looks like one panda looking at the Fedora booth from afar. I think we want to show the panda visiting the booth, so I'd bring them closer together depth wise. I think the view of the back of the pandas head is a bit offputting, maybe you can show a side view?
- I would suggest removing the "FEDORA" and make the tablecloth a Fedora blue color. I would also remove the tiny Fedora logo on the Ambassador shirt- its too small to see at this size
- I don't want to comment too much more because my first recommendation will change the design quite a bit.
Looking forward to your next draft!

Hi @riecatnor and @smeragoel, I've come up with another draft for this one. This time, I've gone with a side view and brought the two pandas closer together.

Let me know if you think one panda should be fully visible, or if it's okay that both are behind the table. Perhaps I could give one a prop?

@rolandixor:

  • I think in this iteration we lose the idea of a booth. I'd say go back to the original badge that @riecatnor linked because it nicely shows the booth. Add another panda visiting the booth or interacting in some way, I think that'd be a nice direction to go in,

Looking forward to your next draft!

HI @rolandixor nice improvement here! Here is some feedback for you:
- I think the Fedora logo color is clashing with the brown of the booth... Id say try some other colors, maybe white or a light blue? I also think it would be good to match the stroke to whatever color you end up choosing for the booth (for example, if you chose light blue, choose a medium to dark blue for the stroke)
- The booth is looking better, though it now feels a bit cluttered. Maybe try removing the pole and top part and keep the bottom?
- I am not sure what the white rectangle on the bottom right is representing.. I think you could remove it or try a different approach to get across what you want with that element
- The panda poses are nicer here, but the panda on the left feels a bit stiff, and there is something unclear on the left side of the panda.. you could try taking a panda from this badge to fit in here and modify as needed

Looking forward to your next draft!
