#807 Nest logo in modern Fedora character aesthetic & flock/hatch/nest logotypes
Closed: Fixed 2 years ago by riecatnor. Opened 2 years ago by riecatnor.

phenomenon

I am working with @lilyx to work on updated UI/UX for the Nest with Fedora/Flock to Fedora website. One of the ideas we would like to explore is including the Fedora characters on the page. Fedora's contributor conference is bird themed so we thought it would be cool to have a Nest/Flock mascot/character to use on the website or other places where a cartoon would be appropriate.

reason

To strengthen Fedora's brand on the Flock/Nest website

recommendation

Referencing the style of the new Fedora characters, re-imagine the Nest logo (attached in comments). It would be great to see a variety of poses though 1 or 2 will probably solve this :)

Hi there! I was looking at maybe creating a new Fedora character for the new Nest logo and basing it off of the Pink-Necked Green Pigeon. (And yes, its a real bird!) It is quite the perfect bird as it has the Fedora colours on it! Here's a picture of it and let me know what you think! Thanks!

@jesschitas omgosh its beautiful! go for it :D

Just a quick study/doodle keeping fedoras colors in the back of my mind while trying to anthropomorphize the bird a bit more. Did the pink blush cheek circle so it could be easier to help show emotion?

@madelinepeck yes, i love this!! i love how simple it is as well! i feel like when im trying to draw it, im over-complicating everything and trying to make it anthropomorphic as well is hard too! never would've thought of the little added blush and the eyebrow as well to give it more expression. and thanks so much for that colour palette as well! thanks for this little sketch! :)

Trying to figure out a more simple color palette- I think we were going back and forth between pigeon and dove? I was leaning into more of a dove color palette, and exploring different accessories to distinguish the bird. I know flock is for the contributor conference so i don’t know if there should be more then one bird? So that it like shows the working together or maybe a bird with some eggs?

I love the little tufts of feathers on their head! I do like the simpler colour palette as well on the dove as well. i still like the thought of having the fedora colours in the bird as well but I understand that it also could be too much for a logo. What do ye think about having the fedora colours in the bird? @madelinepeck @riecatnor

I actually really like the rainbow of colors... what if the mascot was a mascot and we just used a wordmark for nest (maybe using the same font / type style as flock?)

I second this

@jesschitas so cute! I think we discussed the designs at a Design Team meeting a couple weeks back- iirc the feedback was:
- we prefer the lighter blue shoes
- we prefer with eyebrows
- can you try to make the wing shapes look more natural? right now some of the lines for the wings are completely straight making it feel a bit stiff
- What file format are these in? We want to ensure we have vector versions for future use :)
Thank you!!

@riecatnor I can make the wings look scalloped in the final render? also i drew them in procreate so i haven't vectorised them yet, i wanted to get the final idea down first before i went to vectorise it. i can work on vectorising it this week

Welcome Colúr! Our new Fedora character! The preview of the svg might look a bit weird, but when downloaded and opened, it should be fine

@riecatnor yes thats perfect! Will I update the penpot with the new changes?

nest-logo-concept-1.jpg

heres one of the concepts that i have been working on for the nest typeface. Im currently working on more at the moment and will upload in the next post

HI @jesschitas - thanks for starting on the flock logo! I have a couple thoughts...
- Are you moving forward with the breaks in the letters for the Nest logo? If so, I think that should be reflected in the flock & hatch logos as well. I would suggest dragging them all into inkscape and working on them next to each other to make sure they are staying in the same style. Remember they are all cousins :)
- The flourishes you have added look like leaves- are they leaves or maybe they are supposed to be feathers? I am not against them entirely, but I also think we are aiming for a logotype- meaning just the letters. If we want a graphic nest logo I think we can update the pigeon one that I made previously with the new logotype that you create

@riecatnor I have some updated one that I created yesterday i you want to have a look at these ones? I thought I uploaded them yesterday, sorry about that!

With the flock logo, I added some tufts at the end of the feathers so that they don't look like leaves. Personally, I like the feathers because it hints to Colur without bringing him on the logo and also I was thinking of the saying "Birds of a feather flock together" and that also kinda ties the feather in as well?

I started on a hatch logo and decided to put a crack in the a so it looks like an egg. I have created other variants as well with maybe the top of the a is slanted a little bit so it looks like its about to open. I'll post them ones after this post.

My idea with the nest logo was to keep the breaks in it because it brings the online element to nest and makes it looks tech-y but also made the t into a little sapling as well because in the meeting last Wednesday we were talking about the concept up on this ticket, the circle on the t acting as the cross looks like a nest so I was thinking of creating a tree out of the t!

Let me know what you think about these updated varients!

I was talking to Mo as well and we were thinking to change the a maybe to the one in the fedora logo but I was thinking of putting a serrated edge on the a to look like the crack of an egg but im unsure about it even though i like the change of the a

IMG-0320.jpgIMG-0321.jpg

we were also thinking because the two hs look like either side of an egg so we came up with the idea of the hs being cracked open and the atc park coming out of it. I much prefer this design to the previous hatch idea i uploaded

hatch-final.jpeg

I was talking to @duffy about the hatch logo and we came up with this and im vouching for this one, i think this might be the best iteration so far

also going to start vectorising the nest logo as i believe were all good with that one

I also changed the feathers on the flock logo to being a solid colour rather than an outline and they look so much better

Here are all the logos side by side, working on the hatch one and the different possible variations for different things and then will upload

@jesschitas amazing work!!:clap::clap: this set of logos came out great. Thank you for persistently working through all my feedback
