Closed: Fixed 2 years ago by dhairya15. Opened 2 years ago by dhairya15.

phenomenon

Fedora classroom is gonna have a session on RPM packaging soon, @siddharthvipul1 suggested designing a poster to publicize it on social media

reason

To publicize the event and get more attendees

Great first draft, @dhairya15. Some pointers.

  1. I am a big fan of the subtle gradient background and, the simplistic way in which the text elements and the icons are arranged here.
  2. I would suggest connecting with @mleonova and @duffy to check if the skewing of the RPM logo is allowed under the logo regulations for the same. If not, you would want to remove that.
  3. I think it would be great to add Ankur's FAS username in brackets, following his name. Folks would find it easier to reach out to him and award him cookies beyond the session.
  4. Please change the tag line from "Learn how to create RPM packages and more" to "Learn how to package software into RPMs".

Awesome work!

@dhairya15,

Please find the details about the classroom session's time and place here, and make the changes accordingly.

Apart from that, the current draft looks good. Please connect with @mleonova and/or @duffy regarding the skewed usage of the RPM logo.

After some suggestions from @t0xic0der here's an improvised version of Mockup 3. Changes made are:
1. 'Presents' has become 'presents'
2. 'june' has become 'June'
3. 'Topic' is removed.
4. 'Learn how to ... RPMs' has moved up from bottom.

Waiting for your opinions @mleonova @riecatnor @duffy @ankursinha @dhairya15 @siddharthvipul1 and others.

hi @fedorasaptarshi - are you coordinating with @dhairya15 on this work? She had a draft posted and is actively working on this ticket. It would be good to sync up with her.

@dhairya15 the package looks rectangular - usually (i dont know why, it's just tradition i guess lol, maybe icon aspect ratios) the packages are cubes. Maybe make the package graphic a cube and just use the front rpm logo which isnt stretched. I see where you were going trying to skew the logo perspective to match the perspective of the box side, i think it complicates stuff and draws too much attention tho. When you design smtg like this think about the visual hierarchy - sounds like a fancy term but it's not. What is the most important detail that should grab folks attention? What is the second most important? So on and so forth. Then when you squint and look at the graphic, make sure the elements stand out to you / catch your eye in the right priority order. For an event, the visual hierarchy is usually:

  1. event name / why viewer would want to attend
  2. date / time
  3. place
  4. everything else

The title of the class stands out well and the package grabs attention on the topic too (balance it out a little w a cube shape and droppimg side rpm logo) so you got #1 covered.
I think date / time (#2) could be boosted.
I think #3 could use more info... How do I get to the Fedora classroom? Is there a zoom / meet / jitsi / etc link? Is it IRC?

I love the use of the new gradient.

No, I did those mockups myself. @dhairya15 I would like to collaborate with you on this topic.

After collaborating briefly with @dhairya15 I am posting this design draft. Hope all of you like this poster. Also wanna thank @duffy for pointing out the visual hierarchy.

Changes made

  1. Layout changed from vertical to landscape and is twitter optimized now
  2. Fonts are changed to fedora recommended fonts
  3. Colors are based on fedora color palette
  4. Added some nifty graphics
  5. Added meeting link address and irc address for comments and discussion

Tried making the changes. Does this look any better?

You should decrease the letter spacing of 'RPM Packaging 101' a little bit.
The box doesn't look in place with other materials. It is 3d while other elements are kinda flat. This looks off.

Hello,

I've submitted the magazine post for review here: https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/article-for-review-fedora-classroom-rpm-packaging-101/30588

It can be previewed here: https://fedoramagazine.org/?p=33725&preview=1&_ppp=ba659d129d

If you can please let me know when the featured image is ready here, I'll add that to the post too.

(I also see a poster here---are we producing two artefacts: a featured image and a poster for social media?)

Thanks again for all your work. 🙇

We would definitely want to use both of them. In my opinion, @fedorasaptarshi's image can be a great featured image, while @dhairya15's submission can be a social media post. These works are too good to simply let go. :P

Hi,

@fedorasaptarshi Mockup 6 looks nice but it has a few issues that leave it out of whack with Fedoras branding identity:

  • The dominant color is pink, but we typically use blue
  • I am not 100% sure but the typeface doesnt look correct we typically use Montserrat
  • The Fedora logo is too small to be readable
  • I am not sure of the significance of the trees but they introduce a new purple color that is not part of our color palette
  • The time and date details are really hard to read and they should really be much higher up the visual hierarchy

@dhairya15 I like your latest version. It fits Fedoras visual style well. Just a few more tweaks I would suggest to refine:

  • Do you have the Fedora magazine template - I would put it in that if not to make sure it will crop correctly (the guidelines are in the readme of the fedora magazine images repo and talk about what margins are created by the various formats cropping)
  • I would give more breathing space at the top of the design above the fedora join sig logo and the top edge. You could accommodate this by scaling down the 3D pkg graphic (i think its a little too large right now anyway) and if need be making the 4 details in 1 column instead 2 cols of 2 details each

I love the icons you picked... are there single color versions - we dont typically outline icons in the Fedora style.

Hope this helps

@fedorasaptarshi What is the significance of the city graphic in the bottom blue mockup. Did you test this for social media cropping - the fedora logo is likely going to be cropped out. What is that font.

I think it would be better to use @dhairya15 s general layout and make tweaks for social as needed instead of having two different designs floating around bc the inconsistency will be confusing

@dhairya15 A++++ shipit :-D great work!

@dhairya15 thanks for trying, but I think the version with the gradient came out better :D

@duffy should one provide a single file or multiple for both magazine cover and social media post? Can I use a color with different opacity in the mockups?

Hi @fedorasaptarshi thank you for your work on this ticket! It looks like @dhairya15 has completed this task. Please feel free to find another ticket to work on some designs :) One other question I have is on the graphics in the designs, did you create these? They look like templates I have seen.. It is ok to use others work if it is licensed correctly, but do please add the sources with license info for any graphics you use so we can review to make sure we are using it correctly. In some cases creators will require attribution which means it is necessary to add that into the design, etc. Designs that are created from scratch by you or the Fedora design team can be used freely

@riecatnor Yes, they are free templates I have gathered for mockup purposes. I also do create my own illustrations, but those seem on point so I used them here. I don't properly know about the attributions, but they are free to use and you can tweak the colors.

By the way, in future should I make posters with two different dimensions for the magazine and social media each or make one that fits both of them? Also can I use a color with different opacity in the mockups?

Hi @fedorasaptarshi Yes, it is fine to use work that is licensed properly, but we do need to know what the licenses of that art is :) most resource libraries such as that will provide that info.

There are specifics to making a magazine banner, which you can find here. The thumbnails of the design do not show the entirety of the image so it is important to adhere to the guidelines. https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/fedora-magazine/creating-an-image/

And for social media, we take the optimal dimensions for whatever platform we are targeting. In this instance I think @dhairya15 used optimal twitter dimensions. (they can change, so good to just search for that info as you are designing)

@ankursinha please use the images from: https://pagure.io/design/issue/769#comment-737161

Great, thanks very much. I've updated the magazine post now.
