#752 F34 Release Party Poster Design
Closed: Fixed 2 years ago by riecatnor. Opened 3 years ago by riecatnor.

phenomenon

We are holding a Release party for Fedora Linux 34 at the end of the month, and we want to promote the event using rad designs [1]. The release party will have sessions on the latest happenings in the Fedora community, and for the a fun extra we are doing for this a hallway track that we are working on in ticket #747 using the platform Work Adventure [2]. We need a party poster to be used on social media to attract folks to the event.

reason

To get more attendees at the F34 Release Party, which in turns exposes Fedora & our community to more people. Also, to show off the Fedora design teams skills!

recommendation

Because we are using the Work Adventure platform I think it would be really cool to make some 8-bit Fedora pixel art for the poster. There is a ton of pixel art & inspiration out there, make sure to do some research before beginning this task. For the art concept, I think it would be nice to find some inspiration from badges.. Perhaps choose one and convert it to a pixel art design? Here are a couple that might be well suited:

Hey @riecatnor , I was just going through the issue and thought of giving this a try :D so I have come up with something this:

I kept the texts and info on the left side, as it is most preferred convenient to read when texts are aligned to the left. The artworks are from the ones i made for #747 map and a new one i made for this.

releaseparty.png

I have taken the content from https://hopin.com/events/fedora-linux-34-release-party , not sure if it is correct. The new dancing pandas I made i am thinking of adding them to the map too what do you think?

To my fellow contributors contributing here, Please feel free to use these works if you want to :)))

Feedbacks and suggestions are most welcome <33

Hi @riecatnor ! I too prepared a draft for this. I made pixel art of dancing Toshio as I thought he was really cool :)) Would love to know your thoughts on this.

@swast1 Thanks for sharing your artwork with us :)) They look awesome!

Here's my design:

I've tried to recreate one of the badges in pixel art form using the amazing assets provided by @swast1 in this thread and in #747

Let me know how it looks!

Here is my iteration for the release poster. It is very minimal and I have used pixel-based assets provided by @swast1.
I have used ticket UI to relate with booking tickets for the release party. Hope you like it :))

Also, what is the recommended aspect ratio of the poster?

Waiting for your feedback @riecatnor :'))

Hey team!
I'm awestruck by all of your works, they're brilliant !!!!

Your works encouraged me to put up another iteration of my poster
I changed the structure of my poster a bit. I thought of adding a qr code as I didn't know how will the person looking at the poster will join the party, maybe they could scan it or something whatever the team decides.
I am also not sure about the readability and accessibility, so maybe the fonts are not correct

Hi design people! I love all of these first drafts! A few comments for everyone:

  • Text should be something like this:
    "You are invited to the"
    "Fedora Linux 34 Release Party"
    "April 30th & May 1st, 2021"
    "Virtual"
    "Link to registration in post"
  • let's not use alcohol references in the poster :) we have a very broad community of folks, and although we occasionally have had in person events that included beer/cocktails, it isn't everyone's thing.
  • keep "pixel" size the same- try to keep the "resolution" of the picture the same throughout. hope that makes sense.
  • create a horizontal design, since we are using this on the web, most social media platforms show horizontal or square versions of uploaded images.. you can look up optimal twitter picture sizes if you want something exact to work with

@swast1 nice work! A couple recommendations for your designs:
- Try a different color for your background, dark blue maybe? I think some black can be used to support the design, but the Fedora aesthetic does not include so much black (an entire background is a lot :))
- I prefer the second version you uploaded, though I think you can make the pandas a bit larger
- This is only for online use, so no need for a QR code, it will be promoted with a link to the event registration
- The title is a bit tough to read with the white outlines on black, maybe will in with a different color?
- Update your text according to my comment above

@sunidhikashyap nice start! Some notes for your next draft:
- The fedora logo is incorrect, either exclude it or use a correct version
- I love the badger! Maybe you could make a matching panda one??
- Please remove the alcohol
- Make sure your pixel "resolution" is the same.. right now the balloons look chunkier than the badger. Does that make sense?
- Update your text according to my comment above

@vanichitkara thanks for starting work on this! I have some recommendations for your next version:
- Adjust your text according to my comment above
- Remove the paragraph of text, we want this to be image based :)
- Focus on either the pandas, or the cupcake? It would be good to get source files, the objects look a little fuzzy like they are bitmaps
- Give everything a bit more space to breath

Hi @dhairya15 nice start here :) a couple thoughts for your next draft:
- Move the design to a horizontal composition
- Remove the beer from the design
- I really like the background with the shining light too :)
- Adjust your text according to my comment above
- The badger looks like it is trying to stand on the edge of the design ;) I would say center it, or provide something for it to "stand" on - like a roof top!

@leena_harani really cute start on this design! I prefer the version with the orange gradient for the background :) A couple notes:
- the "Join us" text is hard to read - maybe make it white or light blue? The pixel size you have for this is also quite a bit larger than on the pandas, maybe make this a bit more intricate based on that or simplify the pandas. You could also make this bubble a bit smaller and rounder if it is indeed a bubble :D
- Adjust/add text according to my comment above

@yavnikaa nice start, thanks for starting work here! I have some recommendations:
- I love the background and the 8bit elements, but the style of the tickets seem off to me. Maybe try making them 8bit style? I would also try a different color than black, perhaps dark blue?
- Adjust your text according to my comment above
- The small text is a bit hard to read currently. Play around with placement/sizing

@riecatnor

This seemed like a great spot for a 3D composition. Keep in mind this is a very preliminary draft, i was thinking of maybe even setting it up so it looks like the bears are in an old CRT monitor. Needs heavy tweaking, specifically in the color department. Looking forward to feedback.

@riecatnor Hi! I have made the corrections in the poster.
I struggled a little with the typography after changing the resolution. So I simply followed the basics here and divided the font size by 1.5px as I went down, all the while trying to maintain the cohesivity. But I am not sure if it's working out here. Do let me know :)

poster_correction1.png

Hey @riecatnor , thank you for the feedbacks and for the content to go on the poster!
I made another iteration of my poster including all your suggestions:
1. Added all the texts as mentioned by you
2. I used fedora dark blue with light even darker blue gradient, maybe it fine to go with fedora?
3. Here I have added pandas according to the space left, do you think i should make it larger?
4. Removed the qr code :heavy_check_mark:
5. Ive used only fedora followed fonts in this one, I wanted to keep it fedorable, also for other small headings I have used fedora light grey #dedede

postercorrecte.png

looking forward to your views on this one!

Hello @riecatnor ,I am uploading my first draft :) I use background from rad design and draw pixel art for pandas. Please review and feedback :)
Thanks

Hi @riecatnor I made another iteration i choose the fedora linux 34 release party text color as blue because it looks better with light blue background. I hope it works.
fedora-releaseparty-modified-poster.png

Hullo! Thanks for the work here :) Please upload svgs & pngs for the next round. Comments below.

@jcacovski nice work :D I love these little pandas, cute! A couple points for your next draft:
- The green and yellow panda faces are difficult to see. Maybe you can lighten up the "white" you are using in there?
- I like the reflections- though the overlap from "fedora linux 34" under "Virtual Release Party" is making it hard to read. Try putting some more room between the titles and/or reducing the height of the reflection text
- Make sure to review my previous comments

Text should be something like this:
"You are invited to the"
"Fedora Linux 34 Release Party"
"April 30th & May 1st, 2021"
"Virtual"
"Link to registration in post"
create a horizontal design, since we are using this on the web, most social media platforms show horizontal or square versions of uploaded images.. you can look up optimal twitter picture sizes if you want something exact to work with

Hi @sunidhikashyap lookin' good :) I have a couple notes for your next draft:
- I actually enjoy the badger more than the panda.. I think it is because it is a bit more detailed. You could try to make the panda a bit more detailed if you want
- The balloon "strings" are hard to understand because they are black, I would make these white
- I think you can multiply the balloons and the lights :) right now the one light seems to be coming out of nowhere, what if you had different lights shining in without showing the source?
- Since it is a party, let's add more confetti too!

@swast1 nice work! I like the direction you're going with the second design with stars. A few recommendations for you:
- The pandas legs ending abruptly looks a bit awkward. Maybe try cutting them off using the edge of the frame or extend their legs?
- Try making an 8bit style star and using that in place of the stars you have :D
- I think all of the text would benefit from being white, and you could try to stack things a little bit, for example: "Fedora 34" on one line, and "Release Party" on the second.. you can do the same with the dates, and I would group virtual next to the dates
- Let's remove the Fedora logo, as we are being pretty strict about usage rn.

@vanichitkara nice work :) Thanks for uploading those high res files. I have a few notes for you:
- The graphic parts of the image are looking fuzzy, are you using bitmaps or vectors? I would recommend bringing in vectors
- I really like the more stylized heading, though the color combo of bright pink & light blue is making my eyes hurt lol. What about trying some fedora colors for the heading?
- You are using the logo incorrectly, as it has been edited. That being said, we don't need the logo in this design anyways :)
- Adjust your text based on my earlier comment

"You are invited to the"
"Fedora Linux 34 Release Party"
"April 30th & May 1st, 2021"
"Virtual"
"Link to registration in post"

Hi @leena_harani this is looking great! I have a few recommendations:
- Right now the text on the left and the bubble & the date are competing for attention because they are in line and the same size.. I think the bubble is winning ;) I would suggest making the text on the left hand side larger and make the date smaller. You could use the bubble for the title still, it is cute!
- I think you could throw in a couple more balloons, it's a party!

Hi @dhairya15 nice work! Here are a couple of notes for your next draft:
- I prefer the one with the beam of light, it adds some nice visual interest
- We are being strict about logo usage, this design doesn't need it, so let's omit that
- I think the text will show up best in white, I would change to white. I think the black box around the date info is looking a bit out of place. I think you could move this text down to the bottom of the page and move your badger over.
- The badger is looking a little sad without his drink now.. maybe you could add in a party hat and some party favor?

Hi @surender786 thanks for getting started on this! I have some recommendations:
- I like the first one you uploaded, "fedora.png"
- I am not sure we should use the wallpaper for this design since the them is 8bit, I would remove that and put something else back there
- Remove the "hosted by: red hat"
- Remove the horizontal lines, I have been informed by the Fedora design powers that be that we are phasing out the use of lines in our designs, if you want to guide the eye visually try using blocks of shape or adjusting the text size and placement
- give the text a bit more room from the edge on the right side

hi @mahnoor123 thanks for starting work on this :) I have some recommendations:
- I think the dark blue title version is working better than the white. I would make the "You are invited to" text a bit smaller, and try it in the dark blue as well
- The different graphics you are using are all different resolutions. I would suggest using the vector files for those instead of bitmaps
- You have a lot of different things going on, maybe pick one or two.
- I think the idea of using a graphic to make the date point out, though I don't think the styling is working with the rest of the design. I would try making an "8bit" version of the bubble shape, or use another 8bit type object

Looking forward to everyone's next draft!! :D

releasedraft-.png

@riecatnor Several changes made for this draft! Although the exact Fedora palette is used as a source color for all light emissive objects in this draft, the color output in the final 2D render of the scene may not align 100% with the Fedora palette due to the raytraced nature of the lighting. I hope this doesn't prove to be an issue. Thank you as always for your feedback!

Thanks for the feedback @riecatnor ! I Made some changes according to your direction also changed the previous wallpaper and come up with new background drawing :)

Hi @riecatnor thanks for you feedback! I have made some changes in design according to your directions. I also tried to improve the design. Looking forward to hear from you.
fedora-party-poster.png

Hi @riecatnor ! So I came up with 2 more iterations based on your feedback, 1 for badger and one for Panda. Let me know what you think :)
Also, I chose a different pixel size for the Panda, to make it look more detailed.

Hi everyone who worked on this! Thank you so much! There was a lot of learning, improvements, and effort put in here :) To record this contribution, use the comment link from your last iteration.

The Release Party is coming up shortly, and I needed to get promo stuff out, so I grabbed @swast1 design with her permission to finish this up. I am putting my files here for future use :)

Thanks again!
