#734 Banner for discuss.fpo new theme
Opened 3 years ago by duffy. Modified 3 years ago

Notes on the current filler banner:

I would think about the narrative / theme you want to tell in the graphics along similar lines - discuss is meant for folks who are very familiar with Fedora and contribute to it, while ask.fpo is meant for users who don't necessarily contribute to Fedora, and who may be quite new and just finding their way around.

The reason I'm not the biggest fan of the mountain imagery in hindsight is that it gives the feeling / idea that Fedora is a tough mountain to climb - and I don't want to give that impression at all.

Next steps:
- @yavnikaa will prepare a moodboard or set of themes which come to mind
- @yavnikaa and @duffy (and whomever else is itnerested) can do a quick video call to brainstorm the same

I have added some ideas and inspiration here. You can click the pictures to see them and add comments. Feel free to add your ideas and any other themes in this moodboard.

For the discuss one, let's focus on contributing to fedora as an open source or something of that sort?

Looking forward to your views :))

Hey, this looks interesting to me, can I contribute on this?
Also, I have added few inspirations on my moodboard

please correct me if I am wrong.

This looks lovely. I would love to work with you for this banner, and I think we can do it together right? Please feel free to add these images in the invision moodboard so that everything stays in one place.

We can plan a meeting with @duffy sometime in the next week and brainstorm together with it further :))

Great! I will work on it.

Hello. As per our discussion in the meeting, I am working on the hands idea. I have developed it abit so that different profiles, represented by different hands, make different pieces of the jigsaw, shown together as a computer screen. I will show 2 human figures too so that the banner illustration style matches with the graphic you sent :))

The profiles I am planning to include with a core element related to them are: (taken them from join fedora)
-Content writer (Ink pen)
-Designer (Painting the interface)
-People person (hands joined. community outreach)
-OS Developer (Terminal window related)
-Translater (Speech bubble)
-Web Developer (HTML tags)

If these roles and elements are fine, shall I proceed with crafting the banner?

@yavnikaa That sounds great to me!

Hi @duffy !
I was digitising my sketches on inkscape and wanted to confirm the size of the artboard for the banner? What is the recommended aspect ratio and dimensions of the banner?

Here is the first iteration. Extremely sorry to keep this pending for such a long time.
Kept it consistent with the friends characters and used my idea of hands. Not very sure about the gradient.
I am not particularly happy with this draft but how does it look? Shall we polish it further or start from scratch?
Looking forward to your feedback @duffy @riecatnor :))

@yavnikaa OMG this is amazing!!! I love it! The graphic quality and everything is a great fit for the Fedora characters! A few points for the next iteration:

  • The main Fedora gradient is #3c6eb4 to #3c95b4 - since this is a website that applies to all of Fedora I would not advise using the dark blue to purple gradient.

  • The "Welcome!" sign font is perfect, I worry though it doesn't stand out great against the light grey / white background on the laptop screen. I'd advise thinking about maybe a bolder color for the laptop screne?

  • I don't understand the nested grey and white boxes on the screen. Would it be possible to just have the characters cleanly on the screen with no boxes? (Do you need the source SVG for the graphic to do this? If so email duffy at redhat dot com and ask for the Fedora D+I banner SVG source.)

I think other than that we are good!

Thankyouu so much for such a motivating feedback <3

Yes. I got a little too carried away with the purple gradient. I'll change that surely.

Definitely. I'll play around with the colors and let you know :))

I'll remove the boxes. It might look cleaner.

Yayy, thanks.
I have a little COVID situation at home and might take a couple of days to get back to work. On similar patterns, I'll prepare the ask.fpo banner too :))

Here are the iterations for the banner aligning with your feedback. I was indecisive abput the blue or the violet colour on the welcome signboard and here it is for you to choose. Please let me know what you think or any other changes required! :))
