#731 Logo/s for Fedora Web Dev SIG
Opened 3 years ago by rachittshah. Modified 3 years ago

Phenomenon

The Fedora Web Development SIG is a new SIG that is coming up.

The community maintains, makes use of and is benefitted by a lot of web application in Fedora. Be it for checking IRC meet logs, voting for supplementary wallpapers, awarding badges for good work, checking out well-documented issues and much more - the infrastructure consists of a huge collection of application, which requires maintaining and development.

With the influx of contributors at Join SIG who are well-versed with web technologies, a lot many times we are at loss of suggestions when they ask us for a starting point the kind of with projects that they would like to work on. This new SIG which is being proposed here aims to be a one-stop location for knowing more about the web application projects that Fedora uses and experimental projects aiming to serve the community, while listing issues that pertain to them.

Reason

We're in process of setting up our Pagure repos,communications channels. We feel having a logo is a must since that helps us be identified by the community.

We would like to use the Fedora logo for our SIG,and perhaps add some tweaks to it for enhancements.

If this is open, can it be assigned to me ? :) I have thought of creating a simple and elegant logo for this.

I am interested in this.
I think we can pull the theme from the fedora logo, and mix it with the frequently used symbol of web development (https://www.google.com/search?q=web+development+symbol&client=firefox-b-d&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjUyKjypPruAhXyzzgGHSB0AWgQ_AUoAXoECBQQAw&biw=1536&bih=722) .
I have tried the simplest option.
Attached below

Frame_1.svg

Why does this satisfy?
1. Easily understandable for web development due to the "f" enclosed in angle brackets
2. "F" is the basic structure domain of fedora community, so makes it self-explanatory
3. Use of Brand colors

Why use symbolic representation?
1. Icons can put content in a nutshell
2. Icons can draw attention and increase readability
(on going through the fedora logo, these things looks common with the existing structure and proposed logo for SIG)
The importance of it can be reflected in https://uxdesign.cc/7-principles-of-icon-design-e7187539e4a2

Why will the community benefit from it?
1. The organization will have a high rise in marketing due to the direct symbolism
2. The user will feel comfortable and creates Connectivity

How to measure design's effectiveness?
A/B testing - A quick A/B with my acquaintances (who cover major sections of people using the internet) with a high-fidelity version
https://uxdesign.cc/7-steps-of-a-b-testing-what-how-cf3b209467fd

What things could be changed?
1. removing the #294172 color from the background and tilting the f -35 degree angle.

@rachittshah Take your pick.

(Why don't I see @harshmangal here?)

I agree with @riyajawandhiya's rendering of the logo,as it's symbolic of
the work we're doing,as it brings out the design elements much better with
simplicity,+1 to the design.

@yavnikaa would it be possible to add more web-centric elements alongside
the cog?

@riyajawandhiya, the logo that you have shared looks good and definitely shows the sheer amount of effort put into making it - though I cannot help but note the inconsistencies in the spacing between the angular braces and the Fedora logo, and the fact that the logo isn't quite adjusted to a squared layout, like favicons with uniform structures should be. I look forward to your next iteration!

@yavnikaa, your logo has an awesome sense of ingenuity which I personally like a lot but I cannot help but notice the fact that there is no concrete way to relate cog with web development as there was for @riyajawandhiya's logo with the angular braces. There is also a lot of unexplained unutilized void at both the sides which can be filled with something. Can't wait to see what you bring next!

We understand the significance of having a symbolic representation of the SIG which explains why in the first place, @rachittshah created this ticket (Thanks man!)

EDIT - Corrected Rachitt's username.

@rachittshah Thank you for the appreciation.
@yavnikaa, I like yours too, it's quite crisp and clean.
@t0xic0der thank you for pointing out the symmetry flaw.
I have added another updated linked below. Please review that and for the favicons of this color palette, i think this would work. :)

Once, this is approved. I will iterate it into Different backgrounds.

Hello @somya23,

Thank you for sharing your designs. They're really good for a general SIG, however it lacks the element of web development.

Is it possible for you to include web development components in the preexisting designs?

@rachittshah The rounded border with three dots is meant to represent a desktop screen, should I refine it more to look better or should I add on more web dev components such as the cog or brackets ?

@yavnikaa,

  1. Please make the angular braces look like they are an extension to the f symbol. This essentially means that you'd have to thicken the stroke width of the angular braces to match those of the f symbol and bring them uniformly closer to it.
  2. The angles at which the strokes for the f symbol end should be the angle at which the strokes for the angular braces start to have a consistent feel. Please make changes to the ray angle of the angular braces to meet the midrib of the f symbol.
  3. Also like I have mentioned before, there's a lot of canvas real-estate that has been left unutilised so please consider scaling up the embedded symbols to occupy as much area as possible. Also, please consider having the icon as a circle and not as a square.

@ramyaparimi

You'd love to see the awesome progress the design team is making.

@mleonova

Most of the design proposals here have a variation of the Fedora logo. Could you please explore which ones use the logo legally and which don't? Thanks in advance.

@riyajawandhiya,

The updated logo is still unfortunately plagued with issues related to inconsistent spacing, non-uniform look and feel and the fact that the content is not squared. That's not to say that it wasn't a good attempt though but it would need a lot of changes if we are to proceed with it. :-)

@t0xic0der Thank you so much:) On it!

Great job everyone!! All your ideas look great!

@yavnikaa the new designs cool. I like personally like the first one more. I was also thinking it would be nice to add css element to it as well. May be make things a little colorful? I don’t have a laptop at the moment, but I jotted down a couple of ideas. Also, feel free to play around with the colors. I would keep the background Fedora blue though!

I really like the design without W and D, this is just an idea. We can add them if it gets more votes.

@t0xic0der I am working on the previous logos incorporating points from your feedback and @ramyaparimi's colour palette that is, secondary colours used in fedora :))

@t0xic0der thank you!! Yep, my drawings are just an idea of what can be done.

For some reason I am not able to view certain formats of images through my phone. I’m not able to view certain attachments by @riyajawandhiya But @t0xic0der reviews are great for all the logos.

Excellent work everyone! You guys are awesome!

Yes, @ramyaparimi. I like the subtle shadow effects too on the one using the "Friends Magenta" and of course, the green one looks good too.

@yavnikaa Time to add polish to both of those designs :smile:

@riyajawandhiya,

Thanks for sharing the references.

Please find the logo guidelines here.
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Logo/UsageGuidelines#Permitted_Logo_Variants_2

Unfortunately (or fortunately ;-D), these do not have anything to say regarding the usage of the logo with rotations added to it. Inclining the logo to a specific angle does not distort it or non-uniformly scale it anyway.

Alright, I am sorry, I got confused seeing that image.

Hi folks!

I would like to point out the logo guidelines again, https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Logo/UsageGuidelines
specifically:
"Fedora™, the Fedora word design, and the Infinity design logo, either separately or in combination, are trademarks of Red Hat, Inc., and their permitted usage is documented in the trademark guidelines. "
Further,
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Legal:Trademark_guidelines#Trademark_Usage_Guidelines
"Never alter a trademark in any way including through unapproved fonts or visual identifiers."

This is what you should follow for a logo design:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Logo/UsageGuidelines#Permitted_logo_variants_4

Beyond that, I am curious if there is a proposal for this SIG somewhere I can take a look at? What is the difference between this and the Websites team? Perhaps the interested folks can start there instead of beginning a new group.. check it out https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/websites/

Make your pick :))
Also, could you share your email id, so that I can send the svg files for you to further play around or use them directly as you wish. @t0xic0der @ramyaparimi

Your feedback and views? @t0xic0der @ramyaparimi
As @riecatnor pointed the logo guidelines, we can't go ahead with this?

@riecatnor thank you for pointing us out to the information on logos. From what I understand, we cannot modify the Fedora infinity symbol, but we can add the angular brackets as long as the colors comply with Fedora color palette.

If that’s okay, then @yavnikaa can work on modifying the logo, keeping the infinity symbol as is.

Hi everyone - sorry I'm just noticing this ticket. These don't comply with the logo usage guidelines at all. @rachittshah unfortunately these designs can't be used.

We have templates for creating SIG logos. We could start using the new Fedora logo for this if desired. Here's that:

A clean transparent background version:

Please use this version of the logo. Thanks!

(And let me know if you'd prefer the old version of the logo for now and we can generate that for you.)

Hey @duffy --

This SIG has been merged with the Websites team-- and we have agreed on a brand new name:

Websites & Apps Team

When you get a chance can you update this logo with the new & improved name? Thanks!
