#726 New logo icons for Fedora Discussion
Closed: Duplicate 2 years ago by mattdm. Opened 3 years ago by mattdm.

The Fedora Discussion site is just using generic fedora logos everywhere. Even with the new theme these are a separate component. Since we have the new logo coming up, let's do two things at once:

  1. Get appropriate, design and brand-approved designs specifically for Fedora Discussion
  2. Use the new logo!

This screenshot shows the exact files we will need.

Note that this is not a duplicate of #725, although they are similar. This site (Fedora Discussion) has a contributor-focused bent, and the other one (Ask Fedora) is for end-user support. They should have a somewhat different look so they are easily distinguished.

Also of note: I'd put this at medium priority on the list of things to get the new logo; it isn't urgent.

I would like to work on this. Could you please assign it to me?

I have made a rough draft of a logo design where I have used a speech bubble to represent discussion. There are two variants, one in which I have used the four colors and another one in which I have used blue for the stroke.

Thanks for working on this! I have a weird reaction to the colored lines in the dialog bubble... for some reason, my first response is to think that the colored lines mean words have been bleeped out or redacted.

Thank you for the feedback. I added the lines thinking they would represent words. I will try to come up with something else.

Yeah, it's weird -- i conceptually know they represent words, but have a subconscious rejection. :)

How about this idea?
Because I like the Fedora design team, I make this simple icon.
The paper from this icon can be changed with any social media icon, phone icon ... and used.

hi @merc and @mythcat - thanks for the mockups! we're trying to maintain (ok let's be real, achieve lol) some consistency across the different Fedora infra apps so I think on this one it's better to stick to the logo template.

@merc could you post a version of your mockup without the custom mark on the left? did I sent you a copy of the sublogo template or just the new logo (i don't remember.) if you have the sublogo template then use that one - and you've used the correct one there. I just think right now we shouldn't introduce a new mark into the logo.

Oh actually! We do have room to allow for a custom mark, I think I want to follow the example of the old system Ryan Lerch created, by having the mark on the left in blue. Take a look at the discussion here for what I mean:

@merc I think you have the logo template file... the idea here would be a single color mark for the left (as in the two bottom examples shown in the comment at the link above) that would apply to discussion. Maybe it's just a speech bubble... maybe to contrast with the ask icon, it's a speech bubble with a smiley face (to show people coming together to discuss stuff vs ask questions) Does that make sense?

(Sorry for the confusion on this.... I keep thinking of discourse as not a piece of our infrastructure even though it is. Traditionally such sites were hosted on our own systems instead of third party but I think it makes sense to follow that precedent here and allow for a custom mark. Sorry for the flip flop!)

@duffy I have only received the new logo . Could you please send copy of the sub logo template.

After having gone through the feedback I have designed a new set of logos. This time I have just used blue. I have stuck with the speech bubble as I think it is quite effective in representing discussion.Let me know what you think

@merc oooooh! I love that one on the left!! Can't wait to see it in the full logo, I'll email you the sublogo template now.

Those are super-cute!

I am happy to know you all liked the design. I have not changed the font as I thought it would be nice to keep it consistent with the Ask Fedora logo.

Hi @merc - that font looks like the default sans font and not Montserrat. Do you have Montserrat installed? You can find it on fontsquirrel.com.

I like the general look here and think the middle is the strongest - the lines around the bubbles in the 1st and the mouth in the bottom are too thin to be consistent with the icon style in the other Fedora infra apps.

What my eye gets drawn to right now is how the right side of the bubble doesnt align with the bottom of the "discussion" text. I would say once ypu get the font installed and restart inkscape (to load new font after it installs) so you have the right font, i would play with the chat bubble shape to remove that tension. Maybe flip the triangle / pointer from the bottom right corner to the bottom left? Maybe make the pointer smaller proportionally?

Does this make sense?

Alternatively, simply install Montserrat from Fedora repository.

@duffy I am new to Inkscape and hence the issue with the font. I will look into it.

I can understand your concern about the strokes being thin. I am surprised I failed to notice that! Will definitely fix it.

Regarding the middle on, I have a few other shapes in mind for the chat bubble. I will try it out and also work on the alignment issues.

Hey @merc ! Are you still working on this?
Or shall I take this up and complete it?

Oh — this got resolved in #797. Thanks for the work and ideas here, everyone!
