#716 Fedora Character Design Project: Revamp Fedora Characters
Opened 4 years ago by duffy. Modified 3 years ago

This is a 12-week project (that will have related sub-tickets) that will involve coming up with new/revamped character design sheets for iconic Fedora characters in several poses/emotions using vector graphics. Final deliverables should be in SVG format and compatible with Inkscape (created in Inkscape if possible.)

Suggested list of poses/emotions:

  • Confident, happy
  • Same as above, pointing to something
  • Worried
  • Busy / diligent
  • Tired / sleeping / bored
  • Rushing / running / out of time
  • Playing
  • Mad / grumpy
  • Panicking / mistake
  • Sheepish / apologetic
  • Chill / relaxing

Major Characters (need many poses):

Beefy Miracle (https://pagure.io/design/issue/717)

Gender: Non-binary

Minor characters (only 1-2 poses each) (https://pagure.io/design/issue/720)

Tux the Penguin

  • Name: Tux
  • Gender: Male
  • https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tux_%28mascot%29
  • Note: This is not a Fedora character (Tux is the mascot for Linux) but it would be helpful to have a version of him done in a "Fedora" style to match the other three. Or maybe this manifests as, for example, the badger, panda, and beefy wearing penguin costumes or something.

Velociraptor

  • We don't currently have a design for this, but there is an old Fedora saying that it's important to make sure if you some day are eaten by a velociraptor, that someone else could step in and help with your work, because we don't want people to work in silos or feel pressure that they can't ever take a break.

Llama / Alpaca

Yak farmer

  • Another one that doesn't have pre-existing artwork, but sort of a Fedora cultural saying. It's something you say when you are fed up with computers, eg. "This is hard, screw it, I'm going to go start a yak farm." Seen as a life of "peace and tranquility," yak farming is something to aspire to when everything technological is broken and you're ready to retreat.

Suggested Timeline:

Phase 1: Research

  • Week 1 - Research visual style for new character designs, create mood boards / etc., come up with a list of inspirations and share in ticket for feedback

Phase 2: Sketching

  • Week 2 - Begin character design sketches, use creativity course techniques for brainstorming & iterating
  • Week 3 - Continue character design sketches; bring work in progress to Fedora Design Sessions Live video session for feedback + iterate
  • Week 4 - Begin vector graphics unit, begin inking some poses using vector techniques

Phase 3: Begin Inking & More Sketching

  • Week 5 - Post draft work with vector inking to tickets for feedback and bring to Fedora Design video session on Wed. Create a table of poses per character to create, and begin creating pencil sketches and check off each table box as each character's pose is sketched out.
  • Week 6 - Continue working through table of poses per character, creating sketches for each needed pose. Ink via vector paths/strokes as you determine a given sketch is the direction you'll take for that pose. Optionally bring WIP to Fedora Design sessions live for feedback.
  • Week 7 - Sketch & ink, working through table
  • Week 8 - Sketch & ink, working through table, initial goal would be to have pose table completed by this point, post inked draft character sheets to tickets. Optionally bring WIP to Fedora Design sessions live for feedback.

Phase 4: Colorization & finalization

  • Week 9 - Colorize (ideally using vector fills)
  • Week 10 - Colorize (ideally using vector fills). Optionally bring WIP to Fedora Design sessions live for feedback.
  • Week 11 - Finalize character sheets and post to tickets
  • Week 12 - (If time allows) Create simple, social-media ready animated GIFs of each of the major characters :)

@duffy @ldake Hey, I may be out of line here as this issue is already assigned, but I can help in designing the characters. I have worked on a few characters and expressions on Autodesk sketchbook and can try my hand on this with Inkscape :)
You can check out here- https://www.behance.net/somyaupadhyay1

Hi @somya23 - this is @ldake's internship project, although I'm sure she'd be interested in your feedback it's not a ticket open for taking. I'm happy to work with you to find a ticket you can grab or connect you with a task that would be interesting for you - want to drop me an email? (duffy@fedoraproject.org)
