Letter is J.

List of candidate figures:

Irene Joliot-Curie -

Marie Curie's daughter, she was a Nobel-prize winning scientist who was the first to transmute stable atoms into radioactive atoms.

Visual concepts around this theme could deal with transformation / change / conversion, and energy/power.

Edward Jenner -

Credited with the discovered of smallpox vaccination - he noticed milkmaids that had contracted cowpox from working with cows were immune to smallpox and developed and tested a vaccine.

This concept is clearly timely with the ongoing pandemic. We could key off of that, one of the concepts around defeating an infectious disease is each individual caring about the needs of the whole community and being considerate, and understanding we're all one - so that's one potential concept that could be visualized in some form.

Mae Carol Jemison -

A medical doctor and scientist who became a NASA astronaut studying the effects of weightlessness and motion sickness on human health. She also appeared on an episode of Star Trek and is the only real astronaut to ever do so.

Jemison was a doctor (also very timely to feature a doctor with the pandemic) as well as an astronaut and a teacher/mentor. We've done a lot of space themes and I'd suggest aiming away from a generic space theme and maybe thinking about specifically the human body in space since that was her research topic for NASA.

Whitcomb Judson -

A mechanical engineer from the mid 19th century with many railway/streetcar patents who also happened to have invented the zipper.

There's a lot of neat abstract visuals we could come up with I think around the mechanism of a zipper (which he called a "clasp-locker fastener"). The way the components weave together, and the general concept of connecting things could be neat visuals.

Reynold B. Johnson -

A high school science teacher who became an engineer at IBM and invented the first hard drive in 1956. In his retirement he invented technology to enable Fisher Price toys to speak.

I'm not too sure about visuals for this one but the invention of the hard drive seems pretty significant and relevant to Fedora so I figured I'd throw it in :)

How are you planning on doing the voting?

@kylerconway I just set up and sent out a survey via LimeSurvey (FLOSS! <3) to everyone who has membership in the designteam FAS group.

This also gives us an opportunity to get in touch with group members we haven't heard from in a long time and make sure they still want to maintain their status or give them a way to gracefully bow out. :-)

Survey is set to run thru this Sat Jan 9 so let's see what we get and move forward then!

Just an update, it's Mae Jemison! :)

We had a great session today during the very first Fedora Design Sessions Live doing a brainstorming exercise for F35. Here's the mindmap we generated together:
f35-mindmap.png

SVG source:

f35-mindmap.svg

Here are the four broad (but definitely interrelated) categories we got from the mind map:

1. Perspective / Illusion / Spaceship

Some ideas we talked about here was the visual of cells weightlessly floating through blood vessels, stem cells, a space ship mimicking the shape of a human cell.

2. Human Body

The physicality of the human body and how it handles weightlessness (her research topic for NASA)... thinking about the shape of cells

3. Return to normalcy / Cooperation & Unity between people

We talked about how we are all physically cooped up throughout COVID in the same way that astronauts in a mission are physically cooped up on a shuttle or on the space station, and the sense of hope for all us posed by the incredible things astronauts/researchers can do in this restrictive environment...

4. Weightlessness / Tron-style GFX / Perspective

We talked about how the perspective lines inside the space capsule are an interesting alternative to a generic space image... we also talked about how Tron legacy visuals are also an interesting alternative to generic space imagery, and how some of the related images also depict a sense of weightlessness (Jemison's research focus)

Next steps

We talked about moving forward next by folks volunteering to each claim a topic above they are most interested in and working on thumbnail sketches (nothing too intense or a huge time committment) to figure out some potential compositions with the selected topic as the primary inspiration.

So please feel free to claim a topic and start thumbnailing :) Also note you are not limited to the selected topic - it's just your starting place. Absolutely your composition can involve elements from other topics here (or even others not even in the mindmap that are related!)

Sounds awesome! Lots of great content!

I was going to raise the issue of Gender and Biological Sex as well as we are in a Trans = Transitionary moment in Time. Identity and children, who are adults should be taught and allowed to consider their identity in what they want, not what they are given, which they didn't choose anywhoo. Identity and conflict, when conflict arises from the Id in not getting what it wants. I have been dealing with Identity politics my whole life and identify as Binary, as the brain is made of two sections connected by the hypothalamus (sp).

I just mention this because there is picture of Mass Effect. And is Jesus/Shepard a man or woman? In effect our biological sex may be in a Quantum state, a superposition.

Its just a matter of not touching your face. wink

@rootsdub22 Maybe I am a little bit too linear, but I'm not sure I follow... can you elaborate on the Mae Jemison connection? I'm not sure where Cyberpunk 77 comes into things!

My primary F35 concept was on the concept of weightlessness. The core idea centers around a Newton's Cradle but in a weightless environment, so the metal spheres are floating upward and any which way; their strings loose.

I quickly mocked up the following more abstract version in the 3-12-3 exercise and it's shared below.

f35-concept.png

Thanks everyone.

Boxy diagonal design is kind of reminiscent of Fedora 23 https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/File:F23.jpg

Here's the video of the session, if anybody else wants to try the same exercise go to about 22 min in, you can do it "real time" with us and post your results here.

Hey peeps! I dove into one of my concepts further with a marker drawing.. This was drawn with tombow brush markers. I would LOVE to see some folks take the drawing and transform it into something greater :)

Looking forward to feedback and iterative work!

@riecatnor @madelinepeck thanks for the mockups! we reviewed them both in the meeting today. i'm prepping the recording for upload now but in the meanwhile here's the notes I jotted down:

Marie
- Might be too busy / high-frequency for a wallpaper as-is - "my eyes don't know where to focus" - wallpapers typically fade into the background / don't draw attention
- Could potentially adjust contrast?
- Consider a vignette or gradient?
- Try popping a form out of it, maybe optical illusion style, using shading etc
- Consider dropping a color to simplify (looks like three colors, white, blue, dark blue, maybe drop the white to lower contrast)
- Pop out a shape that is like the Fedora infinity symbol / harkens to it maybe
- @somya23 had some references to optical illusion swirls that were popular in India that she will try to link
- Idea: encapsulate design in an enclosure (like the window at the back of Madeline's sketch) to done down the frequency / encapsulate it

Madeline
- character is very upfront and draws most attention, could be smaller? sketchier? blend into background somehow?
- color scheme is dark/dreary, any way to pull a warm color in
- gold perspective lines are interesting contrast... everyone responded well to the perspective lines, could the color change over the time of day maybe?
- "too sketchy for a wallpaper" but we thought this was meant to be a sketch and not the final rendering type
- confusing over if he is floating or falling, is there some other way to depict flotation without animation
- reminded of the movie Passenger, when the window on the space ship shows the earth rising
- light at the end of the tunnel - like the allegory
- if a person is too much for a wallpaper what about the suggestion of a person, for example, a floating coffee cup with the liquid floating out, a laptop, a notebook and pen floating
- what will we see at the end of the ship

Hi everyone!
I hope everybody is doing great.
After yesterday's discussion on wallpapers, I wanted to add some of my creations here as well. So as there were no particular themes, the abstract is something that would look great as a wallpaper, I wanted to share my idea yesterday itself but thought I should post them here to get your reviews too!
All the beautiful ideas and artwork here encouraged me to share few of my creations which i made just from the love of art.

  1. This is a complete abstract twirled and liquid effect I did on combinations of colors. This was inspired by the original liquid art we do use paints and letting them flow, may be even drying them out to give various effects. But that also was a huge demotivation since many people can't even afford paints and colors but want to make art and a lottt of paint is wasted doing it like literally a lot! , so I thought of making liquid art digitally as it is soothing, interesting, and by making it I could find my strokes on a bunch of colors. This could also be made as an animation, where the colors seem to be flowing, this won't be that disturbing if the speed is lowered enough.
    - A fedora effect that could be added here may be - using the Fedora colors and the logo we can use this effect to give a lowkey mention of Fedora to our wallpapers too!

  2. This was a totally abstract art that I made. It is kind of a collage of the pictures of leaves arranged together, line art of the face showing a human and nature relation connected via fibers and roots of Earth. There is also an eye, which is made to stand out from the rest of the art to show how human is always seeking things.
    - Personally, I feel it connected to Fedora due to its color, and how it relates to the beautiful name 'Fedora'. By the way, this was my wallpaper for a long time and thought i should share it here too!

Have just been playing around with colors, very sketchy, feels a bit crazy to include a person in the wallpaper but ¯_(ツ)_/¯ can always be removed

Did a quick thing in blender. I really like the repetition you can have going from foreground to background on this one.

I don't think the below is "it", but figured I'd add for discussion.

Here's some photos I took in an effort to work on the gravity/weightless idea we had a couple meetings ago:

I have RAW files available for all of these. Overall I'm not super happy with them though.

Hello @duffy !
I was exploring and came across Krita (https://krita.org/en/), an open source tool for digital painting. Maybe we could try this out for achieving that liquified effect of fluids due to gravity which we were discussing in the meet.
This also has support for animations, something which you were discussing with Lauryn.
Shared it here as I thought it could be helpful :))

Hey folks! I am happy to say I was able to do another round of marbling experimentation. I upgraded the size of my tray, and that caused me to learned a ton more about the process. I am pretty happy with the results. I have a couple thoughts/concerns:
- There is a reflection in some of the pictures. not sure how obvious this will be after we edit/manipulate. I still have the solution for the marbling, so I was considering doing another experiment with the smaller tray inside of a white box so I can minimize any reflections as well as get better lighting.
- I am taking the pictures with my phone (it's an iPhone 12) and although the picture quality is pretty good, I had to convert them from the proprietary HEIC file to a JPG using some online tool. This seemed to result in some data loss as the files went from 3-4MB down to 1.5MB. This is clearly not ideal, so I am considering options(asking local friends if they have a camera to borrow, I also do some amateur photography so investing in a camera is a potential option that would make sense for me). Though, depending on we treat the photo, this could potentially not be an issue?

We talked about this today in our meeting, decided to go with this for Beta, some small tweaks for blur/focus areas and vignette + fix the fedora overlay logo to be visible

I've been using this wallpaper for a few days now and have some feedback. I think it's beautiful, but a little too "harsh" in places to work perfectly as a background. Would it be possible to soften the harsher blacks to a gray tone, and possibly also add a little more overall blur/blend?

Final versions of the images for F35 final:

f35-01-day.pngf35-02-night.png

These have been uploaded in place on the master branch in the github repo here:
https://github.com/fedoradesign/backgrounds/tree/master/default

(Note I did not upload to the f35-backgrounds branch, oops, hope this is ok)

@luya Would you mind rolling a new package for these for F35 final?

Yay thanks @luya !!! :)

I want to mention in this ticket for the record this issue that was filed over in GitHub, the feedback was very helpful and got us to where we ended up:

https://github.com/fedoradesign/backgrounds/issues/32

I'll keep this open in case we get any additional feedback.
