#689 Digital Name Badge for Nest with Fedora
Closed: Fixed 3 years ago by riecatnor. Opened 3 years ago by riecatnor.

Idea
I had a fun idea for Nest with Fedora that I think the design team could head up together. One of the cool interactive things we do at Flock is decorate our name badges, and also we get to take them home as a momento. I have even seen "badge contests" before at conferences as well, very cute! My idea is to make a digital name badge design. We either take requests beforehand or hold a session at Nest to personalize these for folks.

Benefit

  • Add an element of fun to this years contributor conference, Nest
  • A way for the Design team to interact with the overall community
  • It reminds me of the hackergotchi's we used to make for our contributors(correct me if I am wrong), and iirc people love those, and I still see some in use.
  • Can be used as a marketing initiative if we share the badges to social media, and encourage others to do so as well. They could also be used as temporary profile pics!

Recommendation
Design a digital badge based on this years Nest logo (attached & examples of badges attached as well)

Necessary elements:

  • Nest logo
  • Dates: August 7th-9th
  • Fedora logo
  • Blank space to add in name/irc nick/title

Extras/optional:
Sticker sets:

  • "freedom, friends, features, first" designs
  • Badger head, panda head, any other small/cute creatures (from badges)
  • Any cute graphics we can pull from badges
  • Icons such as koji, package, pagure, logos
  • Space to put a profile pic/hackergotchi (not sure if this is a good idea or not)
It would be cool to make the graphics look like real stickers, aka, give them a white border and a small drop shadow.

@duffy would love to hear your thoughts on how we should interact with the community on this, and any other thoughts on the idea... Should we take requests via a ticket early or hold a session during Nest? Thanks!

Twitter / social media banners would be an awesome thing to have, and to encourage folks to use social media during the conference.

@riecatnor @jflory7 what if we used one of those platforms where you upload your avatar / picture and it puts a frame around it? For a long time I used an Irish one for promoting the Irish language. They used Twibbon to do it:

https://twibbon.com/

What do you think about doing it like that? People could use the resulting image for any social media or even gravatar / etc.

Another idea I had... what if we made a game. Is bingo awful? We could have a bingo board where the squares are empty nests, and little egg icons that could be randomly placed on the board each download, and play bingo with them during a game session?

@riecatnor @duffy I love the idea and will start working on it right away!
One thing I am unclear about is the outcome of this ticket:
- what kind of file is needed? Png / svg / something else?
- where exactly where these badges go? That will greatly influence the format, i.e. how small or big they will be. We don't want to have an amazing badge that will be totally unreadable as an avatar? right?

So I guess what I am asking is technical characteristics of the resulting file =) Because if it's something like what Mo shared, that's just a teeny avatar, right?

I like the idea of having a picture on the badge, but for people who don't want one we could design a fun avatar replacement - maybe a few different birds, Fedora style.

Hi @mleonova cute!! I think it would be best to stick with a theme around the logo that exists for Nest to keep things coherent. Checking out twibbon, you can do a small icon, or something like a frame (see https://twibbon.com/support/orangetheworld-7 ). We could have a Fedora blue frame with the nest logo on the bottom left or right hand side. What do you think?

@rietcatnor I think Twitter autocrops profile images into circles, so I think only part of the nest logo would be visible if the attendee used it as a twitter avatar. I like the 2nd one best with the simpler lines but wondering positionally if we want to care about Twitter cropping our not?

I love these profile picture templates! While this is not something I will personally use, I think others will find them fun.

For me, I still really want social media banners, like at the top of a Twitter profile (with the important details, like dates and a URL!). Doesn't have to be super personal. This way, we could update the @fedora and @fedoracommunity banners, and I would def change my personal account banners with that too. :)

Edit: In hindsight, I realize this is a different ask than what this ticket was originally about (name badges). I can open a new issue if that would help.

@mleonova omgosh these are adorable this is exactly what I had in mind!! Unfortunately, I ran out of energy to put together/host a session for this at Nest.

I really like the concept of a new fun interactive Fedora app. The idea would be some kind of fedora bitmoji maybe? The characters could be pandas or badgers. Some inspiration: https://www.pinterest.ca/pin/348395721154290632/ https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/16206586/

We can revisit this for next year's Nest :) Thanks @mleonova
