#675 Logo for Fedora Pakistan

Logo Request

To create awareness about Fedora in Pakistan.

I'm currently maintaining a Facebook page as Fedora Pakistan and would like to request for having a personalized Fedora logo with some Pakistani colors / touch to provide more of a personal feel for Pakistan and to attract more contributors to get started with fedora.

For legal reasons we wouldn't be able to use the country flags, but we're always open for new ideas :)

These two sub logos designs could be used without the approval of the Fedora Logo Maintainer: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Logo/UsageGuidelines#Fedora_Sub-Logos:_Standard_uses_of_the_Fedora_Logo_with_other_elements

What do you guys think ?

i think its a great idea to have some form of fedora logo for your local home town, it has a very personal feel to it. The pakistani colors are a good idea. I have this also in mind, if you would be using the fedora animals, to have them dressed in turban and wearing the head gears or wearing glasses in the heat of the day or the fedora infinity logo, but inside of the deep blue we substitute the pakistani colors. What do you think?

Awesome Idea @transcendence09 , How about Fedora Animals wearing Shalwar Kameez the national dress for Pakistan. I would love to see the combination of Deep Blue with the substitute of Pakistani Colors which are Green and White[1].

Hey I just wanted to state that we have a standard logo template for regional groups, and as the Fedora logo maintainer I will need to approve any customization beyond what the template allows. We're open to it but please run anything outside the template past me. Cheers!

Sure @duffy , Thank you for the Information.

Sure, these are the two sublogo templates that could be used without approval:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Logo/UsageGuidelines#Fedora_Sub-Logos:_Standard_uses_of_the_Fedora_Logo_with_other_elements

Thank you for dropping the link here, It'll be helpful for the person working on it :)

@transcendence09 Are you still working on this? :)

Hey there. Can i be assigned this issue? I am from Pakistan and would love to work on it. @riecatnor

@nasirhm @riecatnor I attached my first draft above. Kindly give some feedback so i know i am on the right track or not.
.
The landmark in the logo is Minaret Pakistan. It is in my view the most memorable symbol of Pakistan. This landmark depicts the day and place where resolution of Pakistan was passed which meant the long-due freedom for Muslims of sub-continent.
The white color shows minorities, peace and infinity.
While the green is the color of Pakistan.
.
I opted to stay minimal for this draft and did not impose too much. But i will take any critique and incorporate here if need be.
@duffy

Also, i cannot tag Mizmo here that Nasir told me to get feedback from first.

@sabahat Mizmo's username on FAS is duffy. You can tag her using @duffy

@sabahat nice start! I think we should take a look further into the request. This will be a profile picture for that Facebook page. I think instead of a "logo" we are looking for an icon or graphic. Also, let's take a look at the context for which the graphic will be shown:

Screenshot_from_2020-10-19_11-45-30.png

I like the icon you have created, though I think it is not quite fitting with the Fedora aesthetic. If you want to pursue the landmark concept, take a look at these badge designs:
https://badges.fedoraproject.org/badge/you%E2%80%99re-on-a-boat%21
https://badges.fedoraproject.org/badge/kuala-lumpur-fad-2016
https://badges.fedoraproject.org/badge/fudcon-cusco
https://badges.fedoraproject.org/badge/singapore-fad-2015

Another way to go would be to create something like the artwork from these badges but with traditional Pakistani clothing as @nasirhm suggested:
https://badges.fedoraproject.org/badge/fedora-docs-fad-2014
https://badges.fedoraproject.org/badge/fad-phnom-penh-2014-attendee

Hope that helps :) let me know if you have more questions.

Hi @sabahat ! I like the icon you've created - the line work and general design is really quite nice. Some things to think about:

  • Color - The color isn't in the Fedora logo palette so I think it might be hard to "fit in" with the Fedora aesthetic. We do have a green in our color palette though. You can see our color palette at https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Logo/UsageGuidelines

  • Logotype - The font is Comfortaa which is a font we don't really use much anymore. It is also against the logo usage guidelines to use the "Fedora" trademark in a different font than the logo artwork. But that's ok. If this is meant for a Facebook avatar, I think you can just drop the text all together and just use the icon, because the Facebook page already has the text "Fedora Pakistan" in it so the context is already set and you don't need to provide it in the image.

So I think what I'd recommend to move forward, is a version of the same artwork with a different color background (something from or compatible with the Fedora branding color palette) and drop the text. What might be even better is to take the screenshot @riecatnor helpfully created for you and put your design in the spot where the Fedora logo is now so you can see how it would look in context!

Hope this helps! Cheers!

@nasirhm Hey Nasir, do you foresee using this graphic outside of the context of the Fedora Pakistan group, or do you think that's the only place it'll be used?

@nasirhm Hey Nasir, do you foresee using this graphic outside of the context of the Fedora Pakistan group, or do you think that's the only place it'll be used?

Initially, I think, It'll be used as a Profile for Fedora Pakistan's Facebook page and (in future) as a Profile logo for other communication channels too.

Other than it being a Profile picture of the Page, It'll be used in designs for interviews and stuff organized by Fedora Pakistan.

Here's an instance (where we would've used it):

@nasirhm Ah ok I think that would definitely qualify as a subproject logo then meaning it does in fact require my approval. That is good to know.

@sabahat I really like the green you've chosen, I think it fits much better with the Fedora color palette! Some feedback:

  • I will say that the third one you posted that uses the Fedora logo "f" and "infinity" mark is against logo usage guidelines unfortunately so that isn't a good option. (See https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Logo/UsageGuidelines to review.)
  • The burst design you did in the 4th one would be fine according to guidelines and looks good to me as do the flat color ones.
  • I think these designs overall look more like Fedora badges than a logo. I think if Fedora Pakistan wants to issue badges to members one of these would be a good design, but I think for a logo they are too Fedora Badges specific if that makes sense.

One idea to push this forward more: Can you take a look at the poster @nasirhm posted above (https://pagure.io/design/issue/675#comment-697239) and figure out how to work the mark into that design? That might help you figure out how to configure the mark. You may also want to bring the Fedora wordmark and some "Pakistan" text into the composition. If you do, please use the sublogo font mentioned in the Fedora Logo Usage Guidelines.

Okay i got it. Yes i did think it looked more like a badge as well but now that Nasir has cleared the use; i have two questions.
1: What is the "Mark" that you are referring to in your comment?
2: What is Fedora word-mark?

Hi @sabahat !

1) So by mark, I mean the illustration of Minaret Pakistan (just the illustration, not the background shape)
2) By Fedora word mark, I mean this, where it says "Fedora word design": https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Logo/UsageGuidelines#Permitted_logo_variants

Ohkay, let me work on it and present to you some more variants.

@nasirhm @riecatnor I attached my two logos above. Kindly give some feedback so I know am I on the right track or not..

In the first attachment i used the Pakistani patterns which were used in Pakistani clothes and in architecture. And the color palette is related to Pakistani flag. And in the middle fedora logo is placed so that it will be easily understandable that Fedora is in Pakistan and overall theme will definitely attract the Pakistani people.

Then in the second attachment i used the mosque outline in a modern form and the color palette is related to Pakistan and inside which the fedora logo is paced that means the fedora family is now in Pakistan, so people get ready to contribute.. then i ended with the two circles inside with two stars which is a element from the Pakistani flag...

Hi @sabahat - I like where you're going with these! You can't do the Fedora logo type in comfortaa though, you have to use the fedora wordmark logo file instead. I'd also suggest coloring the grey swoosh between the artwork and the text maybe in the same grey to simplify. What do you think? Give it a shot?

Alright. Got it. So i should use the fedora word mark not as a font. But can i use Pakistan text in comfortaa here?

@riecatnor @duffy please let me know if i'm going in the right direction orr not... Still waiting for your feedback...

Awesome work @sabahat on the Logo, I think @duffy would be able to provide us the insight on usage of Comfortaa font with Pakistan on the Logo.

what do you think @duffy and @riecatnor ?

@sabahat Hey! This is looking great! I would change the Comfortaa to Montserrat - we've deprecated use of Comfortaa.

Hey @ritikajain , Thank you for working on the designs, I don't think we can modify the Fedora Logo colors as defined in the Guidelines here: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Logo/UsageGuidelines#Permitted_logo_variants

If you would like to get started with Contributing to the Design Team, I would suggest joining the Design Team's Communication Channels where you would be able to talk to other people from the Design team and can help you with getting started.

Here are the Communication channels for design team :
#fedora-design channel on freenode - IRC
Fedora Design on Matrix / Element - https://app.element.io/

Hey @nasirhm I am a bit confused, since the issue is open can we work on that or not because you last comment varies a bit

@nasirhm Hey there. Just curious, did you guys use the logo for fedora Pakistan?

@riecatnor Hi, May I contribute to this project?
