#667 Design handout for recruiting new contributors
Opened 4 years ago by bcotton. Modified 2 years ago

As part of an effort to steer events toward contributor recruitment (see the wiki for context), we'd like to have an easy-to-update template that event coordinators can print and hand out at booths, etc. I have something like a tri-fold pamphlet in mind, but I'm open to better suggestions.

The template should have some basic boilerplate text about what Fedora is and how to get involved (I can work with the Join SIG and other stakeholders to provide that text once we have a rough design) and have space where contributors can do self-service updates to describe what specific areas we're recruiting for, how to contact key people, etc.

The idea here is that contributors hosting or attending events can provide a handout tailored to their audience that still looks consistent without having to overwhelm the Design team with frequent requests.

Hi @bcotton yes to this! I was thinking to break away from the tri-fold pamphlet to a coated paper 5x7, double sided.. Also, I have worked in making assets for the Contributor Recruitment Initiative into this Outreachy Internship proposal: https://pagure.io/mentored-projects/issue/73 as well as added in an "outreachy-2020" tag, if it's ok with you can I add it onto this issue?

@riecatnor that's fine with me on both counts. This seems like a good mentored project and I'm not particularly invested in the specifics of the final output. So long as it's something that contributors can self-service print (either at home or via a local print shop), I'm happy.

It'd be kind of neat if it was a PDF generated from CSS so youd just have to modify HTML to edit it

That's actually a great idea, not just for this specific issue, but to make any kind of printed media. Something like a web based CMS with pre-designed modules but for making PDFs instead. I'm unaware if such or similar tool already exists, but that would differently save everyone a ton of time and would make everything look consistent with the brand.

I'd be happy to help design this, if I do, what format for the template do you think would be best to use?

@riecatnor , I would like to work on this particular project

@elrumo and @mnavele I was thinking a 5"x7" two sided hand out, on some heavy weight paper.

@riecatnor i think two fold pamplet would be good and do you prefer any colour, i think shades of blue would be good.

Hi @vaishnavi I think you should use the Fedora color palette :) which you can find here: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/badges/_attachments/palettes/badges_fedora_palette.gpl if you need help installing the .gpl file ping me on telegram

hi @mnavele checking in here :) are you still working up a draft for this?

Hi @samra ok, you are welcome to come up with a draft for this project :) a couple people also requested to work on it, and it will fall under the scope of the intermship, so I am not going to assign it to you for now. Thanks!

No one here seems to be active. Do you mind if I join in? @riecatnor

@riecatnor i used fedora palette and I also want to know your opinion about two fold pamplet instead of tri fold pamplet

Hi @vaishnavi the colors are ok, I hope you use more than just the two though :) what are the dimensions for the two fold? Are you getting those from some printing site?

@viv, sure go ahead

@samra, hope to see a draft from you :)

Thanks, all!

@riecatnor these are the colour ideas and i have browsed alot about brochures and popular opinion is to go with three fold and also i have used standard size of US LETTER (8.5 in, 11 in) which is printable online and offline.

@vaishnavir I think three fold is best, and sounds good for standard US letter. A couple additional thoughts:

  • all the colors seem fine, it is hard to judge though based on the fact there is nothing else to see
  • I urge you to come up with an entire design, or sketches of several compositions for review. I am unable to coach you through choosing each individual color :)

Thanks!

@viv I like the general idea of handout2. With both designs, I'm concerned about having enough space to describe the specific contributors we're focusing on. ie. the

have space where contributors can do self-service updates to describe what specific areas we're recruiting for, how to contact key people, etc.

part of the request. Are you intending for that to be on the reverse side?

One other thing that would be good to include is our new vision statement:

The Fedora Project envisions a world where everyone benefits from free and open source software built by inclusive, welcoming, and open-minded communities.

In particular, I'd like to see a specific callout to the importance of diversity & inclusion in our community.

@bcotton Thanks for your feedback. I wasn't exactly sure about how much information the handout will have, so I was unsure about the space. I intentionally spaced out elements a lot, so that they could be squeezed together if more space was needed.

I want to work on 2 projects if possible more even. I can jump on anything.... This isn't bad if its available

Hi @riecatnor @duffy, I interested in this task, Please assign it to me, Outreachy 2020 applicant.

@viv @ejirooghenekome1998 @saralatif you are all welcome to work on this! We could use multiple designs for this as well.

It would be great to create the following:

  • 5x7 card stock handout as official swag we get printed. For this it will be important to look at printing specs and create a bleed. This should be two sided. You can use the following specs:
    Document Trim Size
    7.00" x 5.00"
    178 x 127 mm
    2100 x 1500 pixels
    Full Bleed Size
    7.12" x 5.12"
    181 x 130 mm
    2135 x 1535 pixels

  • 8.5x11 versions that people can print on their home computers or local printers. For this it will be important to keep in in standard printer capabilities. One sided. You can use the following specs:
Every printer is different, but general safe margins for each size are: 8.5 x 11: 0.25in on the top, left, and right, and possibly more on the bottom, like 0.5in. A4: 5mm on all sides, or 10mm to be extra safe.

  • Standard square/rectangular design for social media platforms/email attachments/etc.

@viv, I think your designs from a while ago are a great start. What if you try to translate that into one of the 3 versions we need? I think @bcotton 's ideas from https://pagure.io/design/issue/667#comment-640447 are important to incorporate as well.

I look forward to what you all come up with :D

Hi! In case anyone needs some art for the layout.... @gnokii is working on some new characters (they look really cool but not ready yet) but you could use the old ones in the meanwhile, they are here:

https://gnokii.fedorapeople.org/talks/character_slide_en.svg

New ones will look more realistic, so bit more to draw this time. They also will have different clothes this time. I have designed so far 14 or better 13 characters, on 14 I struggle a bit. But it will take me time to finish them all, no time right now for drawing that much.

Just that you see where the journey goes

So meet Jeanette and Bisola :D But I definitely need 2 or 3 months to finish the new slides. to much other things to do.

@gnokii these characters are cool! very nice work :)

@viv great next round of drafts! I have some thoughts based on these.

  1. Font sizing
    - I downloaded both svgs and took a look. Try to keep font sizing consistent, and if you can at an even font size (10, 14, etc). You should have a font size for headings, sub-headings, text, and small pieces of text like the links. They should be consistent throughout.
    - For the handout with the characters, I am loving the concept! Unfortunately, the font size is definitely too small. I think the smallest we want to use on a print out would be 9? Maybe something smaller for links? maybe. not sure.
    - Based on that, I think we may need to make a set of these, there is too much content. Based on the characters and the concept you have come up with, what if we made a series of them at size 4"x6"? You can take the "What types of contributions are you looking for" square for side 2 of the printout and add in some of the important stuff from the side 2 you currently have.

  2. Font choice
    - I am curious what these will look like using Montserrat. Can you try a version with those?

  3. A4 design
    - All the elements are there, though it is not flowing quite right. I think it has to do with the way you have arranged the blocks of color. I would say try to simplify, that usually helps :)
I think this is a nice example of a clean but decorative layout for a Fedora themed design:

hi @riecatnor please give feedback on this...

There not without reason always style guides/brand guidelines. You think a Fraktur font represents "modern" as value? Thats one of the values we want to transport.
Besides that please stop using non-free material!

Hey, I was following this issue. I was thinking that instead of giving so many links, which are difficult for our users to remember, can we put a QR code for the whatcanidoforfedora.org or any contributing webpage which has all the resources. Since, these pamphlets will be printed on paper, I feel a QR code can be much more useful and intuitive than links written as plain text. What say? If you like the idea. I can make a draft for the pamphlet :')
