#650 Convert Fedora orgchart to inkscape
Opened 2 months ago by ankursinha. Modified 4 days ago

phenomenon

The Fedora org chart over here needs to be updated:

https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/project/orgchart/

(related minshare ticket is here: https://pagure.io/mindshare/issue/135)

As noted in the ticket, the orgchart was made using a proprietary mind-mapping software, and while I managed to open and update it using Freemind, it doesn't look anywhere as good as the one we have now.

Unfortunately, my inkscape skills are well, non-existent but it's probably an easy task for someone that does know how to use inkscape well. Would someone from the design team be able to do it please? (this ticket could be an easyfix for new contributors to dive into?)

Additional info:

@ankursinha Hey there! This seems interesting to work upon. Would love to help you with this!
Just a couple of queries,
Do we need the "curvy" version to be made (the very first link you provided https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/project/orgchart/)
or the more organised one?
Also, do let me know how much freedom I have to change the colors/fonts sizes and the layout in general :)

I think the main issue with the mind-map I managed to generate using Freemind was that it was too organised. Something that has a more natural feel would be better, and the curves seem to help with that.

I think colours are taken from the Fedora colour palette. The "levels" of the mind map probably need common colours like they are now to indicate what comes under what, but other than that, I don't think there are any restrictions.

Please feel free to comment on the mindshare ticket if you need more info. Mattdm and Bex would be able to answer other questions too. I was merely looking at updating it and when it moved to inkscape type work, I found myself out of my depth XD

@tanvi hey are you working on this? it came up in triage today. i can assign it to you if you are?

@duffy Hey! I really want to help with this but it seems like I'm a bit packed with my university schedules coming couple of weeks! :see_no_evil:
I think it'd be best if someone else can help with it if it's urgent :)

Is there a specific due date on this? I wouldn't mind giving it a shot.

Here is a WIP. I decided to keep the strokes and arrows simple so that they would be easier to edit in the future. The text is unfinished, I am not sure which font to use, and some of the arrows still need work.

That looks very good, @malucious ! Thanks for working on this. I look forward to the final version

@malucious - forgot to say, please assign the ticket to yourself (I think you should be able to), so everyone knows you're working on this :)

Good idea. I don't see where to assign this to myself.

I've assigned it to @malucious

I think it requires ticket permissions in Pagure to be able to do that.

Another update for the week. Critiques are welcome.

I think the inbetween arrows could be improved to some other shape. Perhaps a circle.

I don't think the community blog needs an arrow to an arrow. Although the join fedora->classroom one makes sense.

The gaps between arrows are varied and should be made consistent or covered (with another type of connector, see above)

Im not comfortable with the backward arrows for kernel, fedora red team, fedora epel, copr and atomic workstation I wonder if it means something.

Fantastic work on this, thank you @malucious ! 😍

Thanks, you've made some good points. I will see what I can come up with.

@malucious can you replace the Comfortaa font (which we don't use anymore) with Montserrat? If it's an Inkscape SVG generating this you can do a text replace in a text editor to make it a quick and easy fix.

Will do. Wow that's a neat trick thanks.

Here's a sample section with the endpoints replaced with a diamond shape. And arrows used for those in between. What do you think?

I'm not a stakeholder on this ticket, but I think the scope of the ticket is just getting this file into inkscape format. Perhaps, it would be a good time to submit the changes as you have them and then close the ticket.

Then, perhaps, open a second ticket for updates? Just my 2 cents.

Perhaps so. Who makes the call on such things? I have another update with the font updated and some of the spacing cleaned up.

It really looks great @malucious ! Thanks for your contribution

I'm not sure about who makes the call, although my best guest would be the issue opener: @ankursinha.
