#648 Fedora 31 Desktop Wallpaper
Closed: Fixed 3 years ago by duffy. Opened 4 years ago by duffy.

Issue to track progress on F31 wallpaper design. Inspiration is Galileo.

A starry blue night sky (similar to fedora 24's but more realistic) in case you were brainstorming for ideas.

If you are brainstorming, I would like to contribute.
Galileo was the first to deduce that the irregularity in the observed edges of the Moon was due to mountains and craters, contradicting the Aristotelian notion that the moon was a perfect sphere.
He made an illustration of the lunea in its different phases.
If this serves as inspiration or help in the idea, I share the illustration.

These are all great ideas @terezahl, having a hard time picking one I like best :) Maybe they could be combined -

For the pendulum idea - what could be a neat take is on that pendulum, how the wires form a kind of grid / weave pattern - i feel like visually you could highlight that with a composition and it'd look really neat. And maybe make the pendulum balls have a texture like the jupiter moon surfaces - if the colors were still orange tinted, but you took a blue approach to the background around the pendulum i think the colors work well together. You could also illuminate the balls for that high contrast idea. The trickiest part of this I think would be working out the angle of the pendulum wires and balls structure maybe? What do you think?

@terezahl any updates? I'm hoping we can get something in for beta, the freeze is end of August so we'd need a draft in 2-3 weeks.

Hey @duffy this is what I came up with. I went for four moons circling around Jupiter. The style is different from the previous years, but hopefully, that's alright. Let me know what you think!

@terezahl i love this! The composition and layout is really compelling! I think the main feedback we're likely to receive on this is that the contrast between the lighter planets and the background is a bit high for a wallpaper background. I'm wondering if the contrast could be softened a bit - maybe with some texture on the lighter planets?

Can you post an SVG source?

@riecatnor I LOVE IT! and love you... watching you do this drawing and now saw it vectorized blows my mind. A little feedback:

I like the contrast it has, but the center of each pattern (just to me) it a bit saturated for my daily workflow. I would play a bit more with the saturation palette. However, when I see the 4th mockup I can't help but love the "drawing feeling" I get. It's a draw after all.

Contrast of the lines are less strong than the colored patterns, so I would go into a more contrasty version of those lines like on the 2nd one. Let me know if there's a way to reach to the svg and see if I can play with it a bit... even if nothing productive comes out from my side, I would just LOVE to see the vector :D

Reminder that the Fedora 31 beta wallpaper deadline is 23 August. For more design deadlines, see the Fedora 31 design schedule

@riecatnor i love your original design, but i'm worried about the recent iterations coming across as too flat. overall the dark versions remind me of a wallpaper design we did a long time ago that got pretty negative feedback, in part because of the darkness and general mood which was rather somber (and @mattdm was hoping for something lighter like F26 (https://fedoraproject.org/w/uploads/0/0c/F26-final-day-default-wallpaper-standard.png) again -
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/File:Fedora12_mosaic-glow_mo.png

So I kind of took a weird approach based off of your original image, and made it a kind of watercolor type thing with a light base instead of dark. Maybe it's nuts. But I thought it could be a good approach to go, because it maintains the handmade quality of your original that I really love, you can still see the lines and the texture in it.... Let me know what you think?

I want to post the XCF source but it's 200mb, looking into how I can best share that.

I love them all!! Slight preference to no stars :)

It will be interesting to see the time of day version.

Hi @terezahl! I think this is good - I took a few hours yesterday and tried to texturize your work, and tried and tested out a number of different things - I don't think it tests as well as Marie's composition as a background, I think with a few more iterations it could be a fabulous wallpaper, but we have to have something ready for packaging ideally this week as the freeze is next week.

(this is one of the texturized versions I played with):

So I think moving forward for beta we are going to package the lighter iterations of @riecatnor 's design - the XCF source is here: https://duffy.fedorapeople.org/f31/watercolor-sm.xcf.gz and @riecatnor is going to work today on getting the different time of day variations ready, so @luya we will hopefully have something you can package as early as Friday.

@duffy All set and the git repository is awaiting for the default wallpaper:
https://github.com/fedoradesign/backgrounds

@luya do you want the XCF source too? it's on the order of ~150MB o_O

@duffy You can upload the source XCF in the git repository for archival purpose.
I will exclude it from packaging process otherwise the source rpm would easily exceed over 300MB including supplemental wallpapers.

@luya I have them done now; I'm waiting on optipng to optimize the PNG output & working on getting the XCF src pushed to git. Just a lot of waiting on the network and processor at this point!

remote: error: File default/f31.xcf.gz is 135.13 MB; this exceeds GitHub's file size limit of 100.00 MB

:(

Even with larger compression?
With a quick search, as a workaround, splitting xcf.gz will be an option using the following command:
split –b 60m “f31.xcf.gz” “f31.xcf.gz.part-

To recombine the single compressed file afterwards:
cat f31.xcf.gz.part* > f31.xcf.gz

Otherwise, lets leave out the large xcf.

@luya thanks for the split trick - everything should be pushed now and ready to package.

The whole tarball set excluding the xcf files are 260 MB including the supplemental wallpapers. The package is submitted for review and marked as blocker for Fedora 31 Beta release: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1745846

thanks @luya !

did this make it in for the beta?

Any update for the final version of f31 default wallpapers?

Closing this ticket as the design of default wallpaper for Fedora 31 is completed?
