#613 New Libravatar (ivatar) logo and some ivatar sponsored by Fedora stickers?
Closed: Invalid 5 years ago Opened 5 years ago by oliver.

As discussed in this

https://pagure.io/fedora-infrastructure/issue/6875

Fedora infrastructure issue. Eventually someone has time and the mood to create a new libravatar/ivatar logo and maybe stickers, as suggested by @bex?
The current version is running here: https://avatars.linux-kernel.at/
The old one here: https://www.libravatar.org/

Personally, I'd not change the logo completely, but I'm not really good at graphics design (which is also the reason, why I'm reaching out to you), so feel free to be creative.

I'd appreciate your help!

Thx a lot,
@oliver

hi @oliver - we looked at this ticket in triage today. the URL of the current version you gave isn't running. eg "Application is not available The application is currently not serving requests at this endpoint. It may not have been started or is still starting."

So we can't see what application you're talking about.

Is this project still active? It seems that libravatar isn't going away eg

Hey @duffy!
Yes, RH OpenShift has some issues. In regards to design, check libravatar.org for the moment. My version will replace this one.
I can send you some screenshots tomorrow via IRC or whatever...
KR,
Oliver (ofalk@redhat.com)

Hi @oliver if libravatar isnt going away, what exactly are you deploying? and is it for fedora specifically?

Hey @duffy !
Yes, libravatar isn't going away; Because of @clime and my effort :-)
I've rewritten the libravatar software and it will be deployed somewhere in the Fedora infrastructure, but not specifically for Fedora. Fedora will only sponsor this project, since libravatar is used by various services.
I hope it's clearer now?

hi @oliver thanks for your patience. im still really confused. do you want a fedora logo for libravatar, or an updated / fresh logo for libravatar?

we cant make a libravatar logo unless the trademark owner participates. because its not a fedora / red hat mark and we dont have ownership. if this was a new project w a new trademark itd be different but i think theres potential legal issues here that need to be examined.

@duffy, you don't need to worry. It's aligned with Francois that I'm working on this and it's aligned that this service will be taken over from him. Do you need any official statement from him? I'm sure I can ask him to mail you!
It's about
a) a refreshed logo
b) some stickers with libravatar powered by Fedora
Maybe @bex wants to add some words about his (additional) ideas?

The goal here, is with permission, to help refresh the logo as needed for the site relaunch and to add a new mark that highlights the Fedora connection as we are super happy this is being hosted in our ecosystem.

I have to check w legal on the trademark concern. There is no reason why a (non RHT) community member couldnt volunteer to do this though.

Can you expand on this? My first read was as though you doing it was a trademark concern but someone else doing it wasn't. I don't think that is the right interpretation, but I am not sure what other interpretation is right.

I also wanted to ask what this means, as I guess I also don't get it right.

Please trust my judgment on this and if you have further questions we can take it up in private.

A community member working in their free time is probably not going to have a conflict here.

Neither I nor @bex wanted to question your judgement! We just didn't really understand.
At least I get the point now. I'll close this issue now.

OK I can reopen or ping you when I hear back .

@oliver was this ticket modified to say ivatar? is there a new name being used? (where did "ivatar" come from, is that the codebase name?)

@duffy - ivatar was my initial codebase name, but I've used it throughout the whole project in the end. It's not discussed with Francois what name we'll use in the end. From a pronunciation view, ivatar is probably better than libravatar, but libravatar2 might be the better name to show it's the successor of libravatar...
Any opinions from your side?

@oliver my thinking is we could avoid the trademark issue entirely if we just call it ivatar... :-)

@duffy I see where you are heading to :-)
I've sent a mail to Francois. Let's see what he thinks. Domain suggestions? I actually have an idea, but I'm afraid to speak it out loud or write it here, as it might be registered then ... ;-)

Oliver pointed me to this bug, so allow me to fill in some details:

  • all of the code and assets behind the main service are copyrighted under the AGPL
  • there are no trademarks at all, not on the name and not on the logo
  • no patents have been filed

OIiver and a few other people are planning to take over the running of the service and it will be hosted on Fedora infrastructure. I will be handing over the control of the domain to them. So basically, it's a continuation of the same project, except with a much healthier community of contributors.

It there are any concrete issues here (I don't think the trademarks concerns are relevant since there aren't any trademarks), I'd be happy to discuss them either by email or phone.
