We need a new wallpaper for Fedora 29 beta. Deadline is Aug 21 to be ready for packaging - package freeze is Aug 28.
Initial proposal is here: https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/design-team@lists.fedoraproject.org/thread/HJX2RYDRJUEE4HRRGUES7EP7K6HORJWC/
Gertrude B. Elion, among other awards a Nobel Prize recipient in the field of Medicine and Physiology, created many innovative drugs that are important treatments for serious illnesses such as AIDs, organ transplants, malaria, and cancer.
You could take the compositions of the drugs she created list here (e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Azathioprine) and have them scattered around/floating in deep blue space.
If we're sticking to 3D I won't be much help producing this at this point (no blender experience yet).
We discussed this in today's design team meeting. Here's a bit of a summary of the discussion:
ctmartin had the cool idea of relating the chemical structure of the main types of compounds Elion worked with (purines) to modularity, which is slated to make its full debut in F29 (right now we're planning on having F29 be fully modular). It relates to Elion's work in that she worked to isolate certain compounds from others so that they could be removed without hurting the host - in the same way, modularity allows for differnet components of the OS to be removed or replaced without harming the OS. It also relates in terms of the moving parts / scheduling aspect of modularity.
We talked a lot about hexagons, in that the chemical structure of purines is represented by two rings drawn as hexes, one slightly larger than the other.
Some works we looked at for inspiration:

https://dribbble.com/shots/2855729-Colorful-Hexagons
https://dribbble.com/shots/2156342-Hexagonal-Hard-Candy
Which kind of led us to look at the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland for a bit:

https://3c1703fe8d.site.internapcdn.net/newman/gfx/news/hires/2018/4-newinsightin.jpg
And also some kaleidoscope effects:
https://www.kurzemnieks.com/hexagon-tiles-blender-shader/
And some Blender-specific hexagonal compositions:

The latter one reminded me of a Tara Donovan piece of course, because I bring her up every wallpaper :)

Also also reminded ctmartin of those pin thingys, which made me thing of the NiN video "Only"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDsqpeiTqg8
So I think the next step is maybe to process some of these inspirations, maybe do a little more research, and start putting together some initial strawman visuals. I'll take point in the absence of anyone else but please feel free to jump in with ideas etc.

@kylerconway at this phase 2d sketches and inspiration posts are totally welcome if you see / come up with anything! don't worry about the final rendering at this point.
Some quick hex patterns <img alt="test.003.jpg" src="/design/issue/raw/files/19a1a46836fdd020582ddf9359c9310501e3c6c9fa206791c756f219e3b42b78-test.003.jpg" /><img alt="test.002.png" src="/design/issue/raw/files/617a8d967a01638d40afc051878054b407854dcd45e39027a33ccbe2937f6cf6-test.002.png" /><img alt="test.001.png" src="/design/issue/raw/files/93b13caa3171d26660c32ce28548f8f28e1416ce56536fb239cb09c376ac5e7c-test.001.png" /><img alt="test.000.png" src="/design/issue/raw/files/940240fe987bc8320c3b5f53773003767ea45183326540479a2246e7f3dc2603-test.000.png" />
@mciahdenn -- these look great! I like the 1st and 3rd images the best. To get the concept of "modularity" it might be good to have some separate structures (whether physically separated, color separated, and/or somehow else).
I agree with @kylerconway on 1 and 3 - they look pretty awesome! They are a bit busy for a wallpaper right now, so maybe look for a way to make the pattern more subtle or not take up the whole screen (fade on the edges)?
Some more rough experiments:

If anyone has any time/interest in playing with this more, let me know and I'll clean up the blend file and upload it here.
@mciahdenn OMG this is so awesome! i love the first one in the latest set. I'd love to play with the .blend if you can upload it!
@mciahdenn Very nice! I'm partial to the latter two but they all look very nice

targeting august 10 to have something ready for beta shipment (freeze as of right now is aug 28)
Another one I spent a bit more time on.

Hi @mciahdenn, awesome work! Somehow in the latest version the corner in the front is a bit distracting for a wallpaper - I liked it better before. Do you think you could change the palette of this image a bit to be more blue / purple, perhaps using Fedora Blue and Fedora Dark Blue? It looks great now, and I'm also wondering if it could be more dreamy without the yellow.
hey @mciahdenn i agree with @mleonova, somehow the corner / point of the mesh that's in the lower left is a bit distracting, is there a way to round it out?
i'd be interested in seeing it with fedora dark blue swapped in for the yellow as well.
If this is create with Blender 3D then yo can change the DOF (deep of field) and camera focal length ( see Look with all cams - the Properties the Scene tab ) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtKcPFeEJcg - is a example .

Great feedback, thanks. I pulled the focus point back to the original position and also rounded off the bottom corner as @duffy suggested.

Trying to get closer to a fedora blue with the colours but I'm not really happy with it. Any suggestions?
If there is anyone here who wanted to play with the colours but lacks blender experience, I could render out a high quality EXR. That would give you plenty of dynamic range so you could edit the image as if it was a RAW photograph.
If possible, will it be possible to make a time of day versions like dusk, day, night for example?
@mciahdenn i like this latest version, I think we shuld package that for beta.
@luya can you package this for beta and for final we'll work on doing the time of day versions? (I'm thinking maybe the best way to do time of day would be to use the EXR render and modify the colors that way.)

@luya do you need a higher res render for packaging?
@luya the freeze is Aug 28, do you think you'll have time to package this?
@luya just checking in, we got a reminder from ben
@mciahdenn do yiu have any ability to do the packaging?
Sorry for missing the message as this Summer was very busy. I can package the default wallpaper. Would you send then on https://github.com/fedoradesign/backgrounds and I'll take of the rest?
@luya do you need a higher res render for packaging? Yes please, @mciahdenn . 4K resolution in 4:3 format.
totally understood thanks @luya!
@luya added a pull request to https://github.com/fedoradesign/backgrounds @duffy yeah would have packaged it but I wasn't 100% sure on the workflow and couldn't find any docs on it.
@luya added a pull request to https://github.com/fedoradesign/backgrounds Pull merged, set up a f29 branch and sending package for review.

Also set F29 Artwork wiki: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/F29_Artwork#Beta_Release_Wallpaper
Final freeze is 2018-10-09, so there's less than a month to get time of day versions of this prepped.

Not sure if these are still usable since we missed the freeze?
@mciahdenn the freeze was supposed to be 10/09 which we haven't hit yet. @luya can you package the updates?
@luya can you package the updates?
@duffy Working on them. I will post here once these updates are submitted.
@luya you are awesome! thanks!!
@mciahdenn these came out great, thanks for the extra work!
@duffy No problem. Packages ready for testing: https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/f29-backgrounds-29.1.0-1.fc29
To use animated default wallpapers, install f29-backgrounds-animated with the command sudo dnf install f29-backgrounds-animated
sudo dnf install f29-backgrounds-animated
@mciahdenn for posterity, can you upload the final blend?
<img alt="29_wallpaper.blend" src="/design/issue/raw/files/15ca36173cf78fe961d74c69b39f280b252cde0a287562c71e5b527c8ed66d76-29_wallpaper.blend" /> It's not a complex setup by any means but if anyone is learning blender and has questions about it, I'm happy to help.
