#526 Foldable flyer
Opened 6 years ago by alciregi. Modified 2 years ago

In the marketing team there is an idea to resume, or in other words update, the foldable flyer you can find here: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Marketing_Fedora_flyer#Fedora_.28Version_Independent.29
Or a flyer in general.

Personally I think that the layout of such foldable flyer is endearing.
My personal idea around the flyer is the following: the content of the flyer should be generic, a presentation of Fedora Linux not related to a specific release. The flyer could be distributed during any kind of event (Linux days, LUGs events, conferences and so on) and everyone supporting Fedora Project can print it (also at home).

The content, the text of the flyer should be responsibility of the marketing team.
The design team should create the layout. The ease of translate the text should be taken in account.

In this ticket https://pagure.io/fedora-marketing/issue/252, someone has proposed to use scripting capabilities of Scribus, in order to facilitate the translation work. While a LaTeX document is not in the reach of everyone, even if someone other has created a document in this format.

I'm here to ask what the design team thinks about such kind of flyer.

Hi @alciregi!

I think this is a great idea, but we really need someone to commit to being responsible for developing content for it and having the content vetted. Would you be willing to step up and do this or find someone who can?

I'm willing to step up an do this one!

Just a note though, that any semi-automated translation on a document like this is likely going to be a little difficult, as the tight layout of a flyer like this is likely to need tweaking of each translation anyway with varying string lengths.

@ryanlerch hey this came up in triage today, you still on this or want to open it up?

@ryanlerch hey this came up in triage again. we'll open it up next triage unless you still want it!

A question that came up in today's design-team meetings:

Is it essential that this be generated with scripts? or is it also possible to create through standard design? Just asking so that if someone else takes this in the future, it is clear what kind of skill set is needed here

Hi.
Personally I don't think that a scriptable solution is essential. Someone in the marketing team proposed such solution because it could be theoretically more simple to maintain the text content in a GIT oriented platform, and keeping the layout separate from the content (as an example you can see [1]).

By contrast, in my opinion, it could be less accessible to users that would like to contribute in translation without having to deal with git or subversioning.
As a matter of fact, something like [2] (that is a Libreoffice Writer document) is more human centric than using git, make, and so on. But in this case the risk with an ODT document could lead to a layout nightmare, since translated paragraphs could become longer or shorter than the original text.

If the brochure is designed with Scribus the text can be maintained in separate git backed text files and scribus can pull those in and regenerate.
