Hi Mary! Great work! What would be the other side of the badge? Do you think we could also try one with the logo itself, as to make it all look more consistent? I'll look at incorporating some of your elements in the sticker sheet: https://pagure.io/design/issue/513
I love the whale's tail you used on the T-shirt, the coast outline is okay. I understand where that shape is coming from - it does look a bit odd, however. Maybe it's just me ;)

Thanks @mleonova for the feedback! I made some changes to both this lanyard an the shirt by using the elements of the logo to keep more consistent :) I also put together an idea for the backs too. I wasn't sure what on them needed to change I terms of text content (I'm assuming the flock16.sched.org, but I figured I'd post the concept before changing it). I kept the cape cod map/ outline on the shirt, because it's a pretty symbolic of New England and the whole "cape" vibe, but I can certainly keep iterating both of these!

Hey @maryshak1996 !

I think there might be a bit too much rope in these... it's giving them an overall really rustic look that I think is incongruous with the other materials.

I think if you dropped the rope on the rear designs, they're pretty strong. We might want other info on there (e.g. emergency contact phone #) but the basics are there. I might drop the whale tail though.

The front design I think maybe is better with a white background - it'll make the background pop more. Maybe the one-color flock logo in blue on a white bg?

The person's name on the front needs to be readable at a distance, 10-15 feet at least. So I think the name needs to be much bigger and the logo much smaller. Think about the visual hierarchy you need to establish here, in terms of what people are trying to get from these as they hang on someone's neck - the main thing people look at these for is the name of a person if they don't recognize them or aren't sure of their name. That it's for flock is sort of secondary or even lower here - the person is sort of the primary thing in the hierarchy.

hope this helps!

Hey @maryshak1996 ! I love these, too! One thing confuses me though - that the whale tale is cut off :P Do you think it can be kind of flowing off the edge of the badge with no real border?

@duffy I reduced the amount of rope on these significantly, made the name field on the badge larger and more prominent, and made the background a bit lighter to draw more attention to the text. I can definitely try a version with a white background and white logo, I just wanted to try something that ties in with the rest of the designs too :)
@mleonova totally see where you're coming from with that!
Here's some updated looks for the front of the badge as well as the three different variations of the back

Hi @maryshak1996, these are so cool! :) One thing that concerns me right now is color: I'm afraid white or pale yellow on pale mint doesn't have enough contrast to be readable. Here's a neat tool to check if the contrast ratio is ok http://leaverou.github.io/contrast-ratio/. Or even just squinting can work ;)

@maryshak1996 love this, you have definitely done a great job of taking the feedback into account and addressing all issues pointed out and turning out an awesome looking design!

A few things:

  • I love the colors you've picked for the different attendee classes. I wonder if theyll stand out enough as differentiation tho. I wonder how it would look to use those colors as the full background fill on the backside of the badges? Maybe make the whales tails and rope white then?

  • it feels like cape cod and 2017 are too far apart on the front. I think you either want to pull them together and center, potentially scaling both up to fill the space, or breaking then into two centered lines?

These really hang together with the website and other materials now, loving it!

How are these currently costed for printing? Is there a cost for design changes?

Also, given that we are not doing speaker badges, can we combine the speaker and attendee lanyard badges?

Has a price for lanyards been calculated?

Would it save us money to not do organizer badges?

@maryshak1996 you had a quote for these right? We dont need the lanyard rope thing just the badges.

The quote that I found is attached here (I didn't know numbers yet so I just guessed amounts, but if you give me amounts I can get an updated quote)
It could save a very small amount but very little to cut the organizer badges

I think that what has been done previously was to have the "name" section blank (so where I have the sample name) and then made labels that go on that slot so that we don't have to worry about customization

I believe we should move forward with printing 250 of the single design to be customized by labels we will print.

We should be able to print special labels for the organizers on a colored label stock (or some other magic). We are over budget so I'd like to save both the big $$ and the little $$.

We are currently at ~184 people registered. I believe 250 is a good printing count. What is the delta for going to 300? I am assuming 250 is a breakpoint, if not, what is it?

What is the size of the space for the label? Is label printing something you can organize or does it need some other assistance?

Hi @bex here's a quote for 300 (and estimated shipping to the Boston office, where myself and @duffy are located, is $11.60 for normal ground shipping and would arrive early August)
Just to make sure I'm understanding correctly, would you like to keep all three types of badges (Speaker, Organizer, or Attendee) or were you looking to have only one or two types? They all have the same front design (and that is what is shown in the quote preview) but they have the different back designs.
The label size that I have right now is 2.3"x1"

@maryshak1996 is your quote broken into three line items because of the back design changes? I am having trouble understanding why it is a batch of 150 and 2 batches of 75.

Similar to the way we are not doing separate speaker and attendee electronic badges this year, we shouldn't do separate physical badges. I believe that means we can drop the word attendee from the design.

There are literally only a handful of organizers. I do not think they need special badges.

How are you going to pay for this? I want to make sure it hits the right cost center.

@bex correct, yes, right now there are three line items because there are the three different backs (I just used estimate numbers of 150 ATTENDEE badges, 75 ORGANIZER badges, and 75 SPEAKER badges)
So you would like there to only be ONE badge with no specification of roles? Should I rework the back (the side that currently has these specifications) to not have any role or is there some other large word that you would like me to just put in place of ATTENDEE/SPEAKER/ORGANIZER?
I am not sure how these have been payed for in the past, maybe @duffy might know how we've dealt with the funding of these previously.

@maryshak1996 yes, please remove the designation. I think that you should use the whitespace as you see fit in the design. There is no need for any designation.

As @duffy is tied up with other issues, please let me know if I can pay for these directly. Can you set up the order and then share it with me to input the credit card details or what?

I don't know what you mean by the comment but I'm here and able to help.

@bex I'll see if I can set up the order and have the vendor send the details to you/ share it with you once I have the updated design

I put together some more artwork/ reworked the back design for these lanyards
I tried to make the back almost look like an extension of the front by keeping the the same landscape and background/sky color
Any feedback on the design of the back, @duffy @mleonova ?
@bex , I got in touch with the vendor and they said that the easiest way for me to "share" the order details with you would be to just give you my log in information so that you can just order them directly through the site there, or call the vendor and pay over the phone with my account information. I am sending you a private email right now with that account information
Here's the new back design and the updated quote for 300 of the exact same badges

LGTM

Should we include Telegram on the badge?

Is there a space for the name on both sides of the badge?

Once design is complete, let me know and I will click the button :)

@bex
I can include the telegram group on it, but I'm not sure what it should say, because at least for me, the telegram link on the flocktofedora.org page is giving me an error that the 'address is invalid'
There isn't currently a space on the back of the lanyard for a name; do we need that?

The link https://t.me/flocktofedora appears to be working for me. @jflory7 can you verify this?

I believe it would be awesome if we could have people's name on both sides of the badge. I hate it when badges get turned around. It will double the number of stickers, but that isn't that bad.

Are the sticker sizes still 2.3"x1" ?

Hey @maryshak1996, I think this might be because you don't have a Telegram client installed. If you use Telegram, either via the web app or the desktop client, it should prompt you to open the link in a Telegram client. If you click the link from a mobile phone and have Telegram installed, it should automatically open in Telegram.

Thanks @jflory7 for checking up on that!

I modified the back design to have the telegram group on it as well as the name labels on the back
On the back design, I made an empty space larger enough to support a name label
If we could do 2.1"x1" labels, I think that that would be a better bet (so that it would fit in with both the front and back designs without covering up any artwork/content)
@bex , do you know what the process is for getting the labels made? Should I put together a template type deal with the correct size/ fonts/ font sizes/ etc. ?

I believe it should say flock-staff@fedoraproject.org - to the best of my knowledge, we don't own fedora.org

@duffy Do you have any feedback on this updated back-design? Once it's approved, @bex has the order information so we can get them ordered :)

I am +1

@maryshak1996 would you consider reminding me of the details of how I pull the trigger on this? I am flooded with email so a consolidated one directly to me would be helpful.

@maryshak1996 Reconfirming - the sticker space size is still 2.3" x 1" on both sides of the final badge?

The badges have been ordered.

@bex yes! I just double checked and 2.3"x1" will be perfect on both sides.
I'm not sure what kind of process you are using for making the labels. Do you need me to put together a label template or anything?

I think we can do an old skool mailmerge. I don't think we need any graphic elements on the label.

@bex I was just taking a last look at the lanayards and, if it's not too late, a 2.1"x 1" label would fit a bit better. 2.3"x 1" will still fit just fine on the badge itself, but it might run into the rope frame part of the design a bit, so it's not a huge deal if it's too late to switch to 2.1"x1"
sorry for kind of backtracking on this!

No problem. I had always assumed we needed wiggle room. We will be looking into sticker size options starting tomorrow.
