Hi Máirín, I started with the high icon for Gnome Shell version. Due to my busy schedule, I haven't got the chance to design the coloured version yet.

We reviewed your mockups at this today's triage meeting. We like how #1 has a more square aspect but prefer the key shape in #2 and #3. Could you make a version that combines the tag / square aspect from #1 with the key from #2 and #3?

The style really fits the GNOME scalable icon theme really well, but I wonder if a full color version is needed too?

I like the third "slight variation on the top" one most, and would very much like to have a full color version.

Thank you for the feedback. Since @scop prefers the third option, here is the coloured 512x512 and 16x16 versions adopting GNOME icon guideline. I will down-sample to 48x48 and lower later while awaiting for comment.

I liked the simplicity and shapes in the original 3rd version better than in this newest one.

@luya to fit the GNOME guidelines here's what I'd recommend:

• https://pagure.io/design/issue/497#comment-220042 This version as the symbolic icon version (should install in the scalable icon directory)
• https://pagure.io/design/issue/497#comment-430860 This version as the standard version

@scop - understand that we are bound by the GNOME icon guidelines and they don't really allow for the flat coloring in the standard size versions of the icon. I personally really like Luya's detailed full color version and think it will work really well against the other icons on Fedora's desktop. I think the flat colored ones are going to stand out (not in a good way) because they don't fit the guidelines.

@duffy sure, but then again Portecle is nowhere near a GNOME only app, its target audience extends very far beyond that, including to Windows and Mac setups. So in that sense, I'm not going to let the upstream app be bound by GNOME guidelines in case they don't align with something else I think is better for the app/project. However, my opinion is not set in stone, I'll continue to follow this discussion to its end, and then decide what is/are the version(s) of the icon I'll be including with Portecle upstream.

Using the symbolic version as base template, here is a possible combination

The first side is adaptable for both Gnome, KDE and MacOS with the use of gradient.
Second part speaks is for Gnome.
Third part is for Windows 10 as it appears the original guildelines based on Windows Vista is outdated.

I like what I see here, thanks a bunch. What I'd like to experiment with is:

As the menu icon: the brown gradient one on the left in portecle-brand-v3.svg as the base icon. @luya could you produce a scalable suitably sized svg out of it, as well as perhaps the set of appropriately sized pngs?

As the Java application "IconImage": one of the menu icons, most likely the 16x16 one. Not sure if it's visible when running in gnome in any way, need to check on some other platform I suppose.

As the portecle splash screen: the more detailed "leather background" 512x512 one, modified so that the white area surrounding the logo content would be transparent (but not the white inside the logo's content -- that would be left white). @luya could you produce such a thing for me?

Both svg and png will be provided. The png version will include HD size i.e. 1024x1024.

The iconimage will be visible on the top bar of Gnome Shell, the black and white version will be included in the set for your choice.

If I understand, the splash screen should have a transparent background (no white area surrounding), correct?

On 2nd thought, I'm still undecided about the splash screen: not sure if one with lots of transparency is a good thing or not, and on the other hand I'm not entirely certain that we want/need a splash screen in the first place. What would you recommend?

And related to the menu icons, if it's not too much work, could you provide a set based on the more detailed 512x512 one in addition to the simpler brown gradient one? I'm torn between which one I'd prefer, would have to see them in action in order to decide...

Should the application load almost instantly, splash screen is normally unnecessary. It does not hurt to have one just in case an user has a slow system.

For the icon set, both simple and detailed version will be included.

Yep, I think splash screens used to be much more useful for Java based software back in the day. Nowadays they luckily load rather quickly. But I'm still somewhat torn on this.

But if we have a good looking splash screen and it doesn't cause annoyances on faster systems, then why not.

@luya I'm getting ready to release the next version of Portecle. Any idea when the new icons would be available?

However the 512x512 portecle-alt.png seems wrong, it's actually a 1024x1024 image, with a too small icon located in the bottom left corner of the dimensions. Could you submit a fixed one of that?
