#268 Design banners to advertise Spins, Fedora, secondary arch, Cloud.. For websites
Closed: Fixed None Opened 11 years ago by shaiton.

Hi, that would be nice to advertise other Fedora release.
The idea is to display a banner at random instead of the static one on the right side "There is more fedora" from there:
https://fedoraproject.org/en/get-fedora

We should instead link the new banner to the corresponding tab at http://fedoraproject.org/en/get-fedora-options (cloud, arch, secondary arch, spins).

Any brillant idea?

Just a small additional info: the banner we want to replace with 4 random ones is the grey "Fedora Spins" in https://fedoraproject.org/en/get-fedora on the right sidebar. It has a width of 200px, the height can change, but 75px as actually is a good choice.

For 'cloud' see also #224 and #242, 'arch' means Desktop (32 and 64 bit).

These are my designs, Please feel free to suggest anything to make these better.

I like the 2nd arches banner, the others need still some work IMHO:

1) Fedora Desktop 1: the idea is nice, but I think it doesn't respect the logo guidelines\
2) Too high, better the first one\
3) The Spins banner I like more is the third one, but it has to be "Spins" and not "Spin".

I don't know if these banners, after resizing them to a width of 200px, are clearly readable.

All the banners are of width 200 px andd height of around 120px .
Fedora Spins at the place of Spin, that much I could change easily.
so we are left with Fedora Desktop I could redesign it.

Fedora Spins modified. I will try to finish the Fedora desktop banner asap.

Personally I like:
https://fedorahosted.org/design-team/attachment/ticket/268/drawing13.png for the Desktop
https://fedorahosted.org/design-team/attachment/ticket/268/Fedora2ndArch.png for 2nd arch
* https://fedorahosted.org/design-team/attachment/ticket/268/FedoraSpin-3.2.png for Spins

We need also to have the banner for cloud, but they should all have the same size, and must comply with the guidelines.\
I like simple banners, without too much elements inside, but what about adding some nice effect, such as a mirror or a shadow? Unfortunately my graphic skills are very bad and I don't even have so much fantasy... :)

Thank you for working on it.

IMHO: It's better if they all follow the same design (or at least have the same shape or colors). Just an idea.

  • Fedora2ndArch.png is nice but I would think it's more about 32Vs64bits than secondary architectures. But could works though.
  • FedoraSpin-3.png is nice but I don't know if the grey background comply with the logo guidelines
  • For desktops I prefer drawing13.png but.

On an other hands, what we call Fedora Desktop is the default Fedora with GNOME for 32 or 64 bits.
KDE, LXDE and Xfce are under the Spin umbrella. Sorry, I was not crystal-clear.

Thanks for your artwork!

I would say that my favs were Fedora2ndArch.png and FedoraSpin-2.png

Hi Nitesh,

Here's some feedback on the latest designs:

  • '''General''': all of the designs you've done are different sizes / aspect ratios. I think for the website this will be a problem. We have a standard size of banner we've traditionally used on fedoraproject.org - the size is 200x100 pixels (and usually with rounded corners. See our current release banner for an example: https://fedoraproject.org/static/images/banners/f18release.png )

  • '''drawing13.png''': as shaiton already commented, this one is problematic because it lists 4 separate desktops. The Fedora desktop spin is the GNOME spin. So this should only use the GNOME symbol. Also, the font used for 'Desktop' is not correct. It should be Comfortaa. Please see the following guidelines for creating this logo: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Logo/UsageGuidelines#Fedora_Sub-Logos:_Standard_uses_of_the_Fedora_Logo_with_other_elements

  • '''drawing.png''': this is an OK concept but the text is far too small to read. :( Can you make the image and text bigger?

  • '''drawing14.png''': this is a misuse of the four foundations logo - you simply can't use it in that way, sorry. :(

  • '''Fedora 2ndArch Banner.png''': again, this is an okay concept but the text is far too small to read.

Hope this helps.

Sure I will keep that in mind and work out the designs again. Thanks for the feedback.

May i suggest that instead of just one proposal, make at least 5 different proposals per banner, '''make a lot of them'''.

Don't dedicate much time to them, just quick differents proposals.
In that way we can compare designs and provide you better feedback, and find what work best.

Iterating over just 1 design will take you a lot of time and may not achieve great quality.

ñ_ñ waiting for your great ideas

Cheers =)

PD: 'Different' means radically differents, not just small changes on colors or sizes, etc.

About the feedback of the current designs.

First of all, i must say that i don't represent the design team opinion, just mine.

I don't see why you have to stamp the fedora logo in all the designs. Using the fedora typography and/or fedora colors should be enough to link your concept with fedora.

[https://fedorahosted.org/design-team/attachment/ticket/268/FedoraSpingFinalV2.png Spin]: The layout is cleaner than before which is a plus working on small sizes, the gears aren't working for you, they are creating some artifacts. Aside from that, i don't see how a gear is related to a spin, maybe an ice cream will be more related or some cirles/dots with different colors, etc.

[https://fedorahosted.org/design-team/attachment/ticket/268/Fedora2ndArchsFinalV2.png ARCHS]: Since i'm not a native speaker i can't understand what does this means. But i can tell you that in this case you have contrast problems, for example the fedora logo is lost inside the microchip, the dark blue doesn't make contrast with black. The same happens to the cables of the microchips.

[https://fedorahosted.org/design-team/attachment/ticket/268/FedoraDesktopFinalV2.png Desktop]: It has much better contrast than before. Don't know why the 64 couldn't be aligned with the 32 bits.

In the overall you are making progress, but as i said in me previous feedback, if you make different proposal per banner you will achieve the final result faster and better.

Thanks a lot for your feedback :) although I do agree with your Fedora 2nd Arch comment .
I will try something else .
Thanks again for your comments .
I am hoping for more help from your side so that I could improve myself.

I like the last banners you uploaded :)

There is only the Desktop banner which has a very large font. If you can make it like the others I think they are ok for being pushed into production.

Made the changes :).
Let me know if anything else is required.

niteshnarayan, are these the 4 suggested designs?

The background colours still make it a little hard to read the text on most of the banners.

Also, not sure if we need the fedora logo on these banners either. They are going to be on the fedora site, so not sure if we want to use precious space on the banners to re-display the logo.

Here is a quick re-do of the banners that i whipped up:

I really liked the above designs, simple yet effective. Although I was thinking to make some modifications in the spin banner. But right now I am not sure what those changes will be. If time allows I will make the changes and put it here .
Thanks Ryan :)

Robyduck I had made the changes as per your suggestion, please do let me know if there is anything else needs to be done .

Banners have been added with web-commit 22c946a.

Thanks to niteshnarayan and ryanlerch.
