#173 Request for a common Fedora lovelock wallpaper
Closed: Invalid None Opened 13 years ago by cwickert.

Although the desktop SIG has decided to go with GNOME upstream's wallpaper for F15, many desktop environments/spins are in need of a Fedora Lovelock themed wallpaper, ether because their upstream does not provide artwork or the provided artwork does not meet the quality we want. We also feel that Fedora spins should have a common visual Fedora branding and fresh artwork for every Fedora release. The latter is something that only GNOME can provide because their schedule is pretty much in line with Fedora's and they have enough designers. Other desktops don't and we ship the same release of a DE throughout several Fedora releases.

Last but not least we want to show that we appreciate the amazing work the Fedora design-team has done in the past by giving them the chance to prove their outstanding skills once more.

Desktops/spins in question:
KDE (to be determined by SIG)
Xfce (definitely)
LXDE (definitely)
Security Spin (which uses LXDE's wallpaper despite claimed otherwise)

I may be confused here, but just because the Red Hat desktop team (which has a pretty big overlap with the upstream Gnome development team) has requested that we use the Gnome upstream wallpaper for F15 does not mean that it's a foregone conclusion. Let me state again (for the record) that it's up to the Fedora Design team to make that decision, and as of yesterday's meeting, they have not yet made a decision.

That being said, I tend to agree that we need artwork for F15 no matter what decision is made regarding the Gnome default background. We'll need it for website banners, anaconda splash screens, non-Gnome desktop environments, and so forth. All of these things require artwork proposals. So please, design a wallpaper and submit it as a proposal! (Or if you're like me and can't draw yourself out of a wet paper bag, encourage your artistic friends to design a wallpaper).

This is correct. We decided to see if we have any wallpaper proposals other than the GNOME 3 desktop by our regular proposal deadline.

Jared, thanks for your reply. Ian, this is only half or the truth I'm afraid.

AFAICS from the [http://meetbot.fedoraproject.org/fedora-design/2011-01-04/fedora-design.2011-01-04-19.00.log.html meeting minutes] the agreement was
to "[http://meetbot.fedoraproject.org/fedora-design/2011-01-04/fedora-design.2011-01-04-19.00.log.html#l-258 have each desktop environment use its default wallpaper]" and ''only'' revisit this issue "[http://meetbot.fedoraproject.org/fedora-design/2011-01-04/fedora-design.2011-01-04-19.00.log.html#l-288 if we receive any design proposals we can agree on]" by the [http://meetbot.fedoraproject.org/fedora-design/2011-01-04/fedora-design.2011-01-04-19.00.log.html#l-209 deadline of January 18th]. Otherwise, "[http://meetbot.fedoraproject.org/fedora-design/2011-01-04/fedora-design.2011-01-04-19.00.log.html#l-221 we automatically go with the upstream wallpaper]".

So far "[http://meetbot.fedoraproject.org/fedora-design/2011-01-04/fedora-design.2011-01-04-19.00.log.html#l-210 we dont have any submissions]", not to mention that the design-team has to ''agree'' on one. I think this is very unlikely because the driving force in the approach to use the upstream wallpaper is the leader of the design team. This is a de-facto decision that will not encourage any submissions. I feel we are presented a fait accompli rather than a decision that is open to further unbiased discussion.

Even If I'm wrong here (and I'd love to be proven wrong) I consider this ticket useful to correct two false assumptions that the discussion of the design team was based on:
* [http://meetbot.fedoraproject.org/fedora-design/2011-01-04/fedora-design.2011-01-04-19.00.log.html#l-231 The wallpaper that is about to be designed ''might'' only used so there is no use spending time on it]. It ''definitely'' will be used.
* [http://meetbot.fedoraproject.org/fedora-design/2011-01-04/fedora-design.2011-01-04-19.00.log.html#l-246 All spins/desktops have their upstream artwork]. - No they don't not to mention the WMs we ship although they are not part of a spin.

F15 is gold, so closing ticket.
