#170 Media artwork for F15 multi desktop DVD
Closed: Fixed None Opened 13 years ago by cwickert.

I hereby request the design team to produce media artwork for the multi desktop DVD in F15.

The artwork should use the F15 design. Texts and instructions on how to use the media will be delivered by Jared.

This task is tracked by schedule also.
Design team please move forward with that.

I've agreed to do the instructional text for the media sleeves that describes how to use the boot menu, but I'm still waiting on a working build script so that I can test the boot menu and properly describe how it works.

And I'm waiting for rel-eng...

... to provide me the script. IIRC you wanted to ping them, Jared.

I know Spot is working on it, I talked to him yesterday, but I don't think this matters for this ticket. If we get the scribus sources we can change the text at any time and until then 'lore ipsim' will do.

Jared, the script is ready now and available at
http://fedorapeople.org/spot/public_git/multiboot-media-creator.git;a=summary
Please test it and provide the wording for the sleeves because the current text no longer is correct (not only for the multi desktop spin but for all media).

Sorry, URL was messed up. Either

http://fedorapeople.org/gitweb?p=spot/public_git/multiboot-media-creator.git;a=summary

or
git clone git://fedorapeople.org/home/fedora/spot/public_git/multiboot-media-creator.git

10 days have passed, another ping at Jared.

Here's an idea -- why don't we reach out to someone who's worked on this task before, to see if they're interested in helping? What if we asked Alexander Smirnov, who did such a fantastic job on the Fedora 14 media? I'm adding him to cc on this ticket to see if he's available to help.

In fact I have contacted Alexander by private mail 10 days ago, too. Alexaner has created the media already, but there are some problems:

All media:
* Minimum requirements are 560 MB for 32bit and MB 624 MB for 64 ([https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=682555 Link])
* All live media boot straight into the desktop, there is no language and
* Keyboard selection and the text needs to be changed accordingly.

Xfce Live:
* The official spelling of Xfce is "Xfce" and not "XFCE".

Multi-Desktop Live:
* This media is both 32 and 64 bit on one media, but it requires a Dual Layer DVD drive. I suggest you just remove the mention of 32 or 64 bit. Suggestion for a text:
{{{
Ensure that your computer can boot from it's Dual Layer capable DVD
drive, then insert the disc, and restart your computer.

Select your desktop in the boot menu. The boot loader will automatically
detect your CPU, however you can also select 32 or 64 bit manually.

...
}}}

  • Can you also do a version of the Install DVD with both 32 and 64 bit one
    one media? This was the original idea.

In addition to that the media company has asked for some more changes:
* PDF-X3 instead of PDF 1.5
* Pantone instead of CMYK

@stickster: The idea was to have a native English speaker do the exact wording of the text. Jsmith said he would do it. Alexander got back to me yesterday and fixed the issues I brought up, so all we are waiting for is a native English speaker.

I'm adding the content for what needs to go in the legal text area, per the mail Nick Bebout sent to the design-team list: http://lists.fedoraproject.org/pipermail/design-team/2011-May/004312.html .. just so that it is here and easy to find.

Sorry for the slow response -- I haven't yet been able to download the multi-boot DVD image to test it out. I'm hoping to be able to do that over the next day or two. In the meantime, if someone can send me a screenshot or photo of the various stages of the boot menu, it would help me out.

Ensure that your DVD drive is capable of reading dual-layer DVD discs and that your computer is configured to boot from the DVD drive. Insert the disc into the DVD drive, and restart your computer.

At the boot menu, select your preferred desktop environment. If you are unsure, simple press ENTER to select the default. The boot loader will automatically detect your CPU type, but you may select a 32-bit or 64-bit image manually from the boot menu.

We hope that you enjoy using Fedora. If so, you can install it to your computer using the "I
nstall to Hard Disk" icon on the desktop or Activies menu.

For futher assistance, visit http//help.fedoraproject.org

MINIMUM HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS: 400 MHz 32-bit Intel-compatible processor with 640 MB RAM. Installation of the complete package set can occupy over 9 GB of hard drive space.

Minor nits:

  • ...If you are unsure, '''simply''' press Enter...
  • ...using the "Install to Hard Disk"...
  • ...on the desktop or Activities menu.

Just clarifying to prevent a copy-pasta issue. :-)

This sounds a little strange as GNOME doesn't have the link on the desktop while the other environments don't have an 'Activities' menu.

I suggest to simply remove "on the desktop or Activies menu." or even the whole sentence. I think we are running into space problems because with the legal text it is quite a lot, way more than in previous releases.

If the space is that tight, and it can't be resolved by slightly adjusting the font size, I recommend including a link to a wiki page describing the procedure per desktop. There should be some indication that the user can install from the images as well as run them.

nb has posted a draft version of the multi-desktop sleeve artwork at http://nb.fedorapeople.org/art/Fedora-15-livemedia-multi.pdf, and would love feedback on it.

Two minor problems (which I've also emailed to Alexander)

1) The Fedora-15-livemedia-multi.png image still says "simple press ENTER" instead of "simply press ENTER"
2) The installation media sleeves (both 32 and 64 bit) have a weird line break on the line that says "The installer will guide you". Why does that line break earlier than all of the other lines?
