I am aware that we miss the version 2 compatibility. It is even mentioned in a disclaimer in the modularity documentation

(Oops, I made a mistake though, there is no version 3, the version 2 is not supported instead. Let me fix that)
Anyway, I was postponing the implementation because I was tired of implementing everything over and over again without sharing the code with the rest of the modularity team.
This issue will solve itself as a side effect of using modulemd-tools package.
