#22 kmod: FireWire support plea....
Opened 6 months ago by pagetelegram. Modified 6 months ago

Hi,

I have a request for continued FireWire support. I continue to support DV/miniDV transfers in my community.

Thank you,
Jason

Can you please provide further details?

In particular:
Which kernel modules do you request to be added?
Which EL major release do you refer to?

Afaik FireWire is supported in EL8. Is there something missing?

In case you are referring to EL9, please also check the supported architectures:

AMD and Intel 64-bit architectures (x86-64-v2)
The 64-bit ARM architecture (ARMv8.0-A)
IBM Power Systems, Little Endian (POWER9)
64-bit IBM Z (z14)

Requesting continued FireWire support for AMD and Intel 64-bit architectures (x86-64-v2) and downstreams, AlmaLinux, for EL9.

I reached out to Patrick Riehecky and he suggested I request FireWire be continued here.

Message comes up during boot that FireWire support will be removed in next major release.

I'll put it in my backlog. However I do not know yet when I'll have time to have a look at it.

Comparing EL8 to EL9 it seems the following configs/modukes are missing

CONFIG_FIREWIRE=m
CONFIG_FIREWIRE_OHCI=m
CONFIG_FIREWIRE_SBP2=m
CONFIG_FIREWIRE_NET=m
CONFIG_SND_FIREWIRE=y
CONFIG_SND_FIREWIRE_LIB=m
CONFIG_SND_FIREWIRE_DIGI00X=m
CONFIG_SND_FIREWIRE_TASCAM=m
CONFIG_SND_FIREWIRE_MOTU=m

Are there any other kernel modules missing?

I would not know. However I am willing to beta test with my DV deck (photo attached) on another system or HDD. The tool I use for interfacing i/o with DV deck is 'dvgrab'

There seems to be one more config option in el9:

CONFIG_FIREWIRE_SERIAL=m

config FIREWIRE_SERIAL
tristate "TTY over Firewire"
depends on FIREWIRE && TTY
help
This enables TTY over IEEE 1394, providing high-speed serial
connectivity to cabled peers. This driver implements a
ad-hoc transport protocol and is currently limited to
Linux-to-Linux communication.
