#578 Rename kernel-auto source RPM repository due to confusion with suffix "-auto".
Closed: Fixed with Explanation 2 years ago by arrfab. Opened 2 years ago by jfaracco.

The project kernel-auto belongs to Automotive Kernel, but most people are confused because it can lead to words like "automatic", "automation", etc.

The current source RPM repository URL is: https://git.centos.org/rpms/kernel-auto
We need to change it to: https://git.centos.org/rpms/kernel-automotive

There is a MR opened to change this but it still requires approvals. Due to holidays some folks are out. Once it is merged we can change everything. For further reference the MR is: https://gitlab.com/redhat/centos-stream/src/kernel/centos-stream-9/-/merge_requests/289

I'm not sure if we need to change other pieces like CBS tags and others. I guess the answer is yes.

The CBS tags already mention automotive, so we're good on this side.

For the renaming, we need to do this at the DB + filesystem level

I have updated the description at https://gitlab.com/redhat/automotive/kernel-auto-centos-stream-9

@jfaracco will the branch name change as well in the kernel repo?

@pingou wondering what's the best option, either rename (through DB and filesystem) the project or just create a new one and push all history to that one. Just thinking about people eventually trying to use previous git repo and unable to find it anymore (initially reason why RH legal told us to not permit to delete any created project on git.centos.org).

Creating a new one is indeed, also an option.

Since there is no tickets or PRs, it might be the easiest indeed :)

@pingou so if you agree I can proceed and create kernel-automotive and you can just then push existing commits to the new project.

Let's see what @jfaracco thinks of it

If there is no way to rename the existing one, I agree to create a new repo with the correct name.

We can just leave a note inside the README.md saying that it was moved to the new one.

My only concern is if someone ask to change the package name again for any business purpose. I guess it is hard to happen.

https://git.centos.org/rpms/kernel-automotive is now created so you can just all commits to new project (and lookaside cache already has all) and also reflect the package name change (I guess it will also become kernel-automotive so you'll have to rebuild it anyway (https://cbs.centos.org/koji/packageinfo?packageID=8802)
