#290 Registration of domain name centos.com.au

Moving from CentOS Board issue tracker: https://git.centos.org/centos/board/issue/26

Hello,

I am a network operator of a network based in Sydney, AS136753. I wish to establish a mirror hosting the CentOS repository and to do so, I would like to register centos.com.au to utilise the hostname mirror.syd.centos.com.au, mirror.vic.centos.org, etc.

I understand that CentOS is a registered trademark, and in order to achieve this, consent from the CentOS board must be sought. I would like to request consent to register the domain name, and establish the mirror as mentioned above. If there are any questions, please do reach out.

Regards,
Christopher Hawker
AS136754

This usually requires Red Hat legal sign-off first and not Infrastructure due to past problems with domains getting registered 'by permission' and then misused but then having to be expensively moved over to Red Hat afterwords.

Yes. Correct. And that has been communicated to Mr. Hawker. What still remains to be determined is if we are willing to register this domain on his behalf, and direct the DNS record to his service. Specifically what service he proposed to run is unclear, and that should be determined.

It is also worth noting that the issue was first opened in October 2020, so this has been sitting for six months without any action. Mostly because the ticket was in the wrong place.

Including additional response from Mr. Hawker, upon communicating with him that he is not permitted to register this himself due to trademark issues.

Hi Rich, thank you for your reply.

I am happy to work with the Infrastructure SIG to make it happen, however there are conditions for registering .au domain names (https://www.auda.org.au/assets/Uploads/au-Domain-Administration-Rules-Licensing-12-October-2020.pdf) which is why I was looking for consent to register it. Having said that, if CentOS/RHEL has a way to register a .au domain then I'd be more than willing to work with them.

How can we move forward with registration of the domain?

Easy one :
Because it has trademark, this has to be indeed discussed through CentOS Board and RH liaison for the board, so closing here

Other fact : Red Hat requires any registered domain to be managed by us and not external party, as they ask us to comply to some rules (after some security scanning, as one simple example) which isn't possible for someone who registers a domain name and that service/infra not under our control at all

I see that I provided insufficient backstory here.

The Board did discuss this, and asked that it be passed to the Infra SIG for implementation details. And, yes, the request is for Red Hat to register and manage the domain, on behalf of Mr Hawker in Australia, if we determine that the service he wishes to provide is in line with what we are willing to "support".
