#37 Proposal for distributing Fedora swag outside of conferences/events
Closed: Fixed None Opened 11 years ago by ianweller.

Currently if someone wants to get a Fedora-branded shirt or other item, they must go to a conference or show where our ambassadors are to try to get a shirt.

I would like to propose extending spot's "Thank You" system 1 of returning stickers in self-addressed stamped envelopes to other Fedora swag that we hand out at conferences and the like. The process would look something like this:

  • A list of available items is made online
  • A person requests an item and is instructed to create and pay for a shipping label, then send that shipping label to me
  • I print the label and ship the item

This takes care of most of the issues with setting up some sort of Fedora Swag Store, most notably the "we can't accept money" issue. (That being said I haven't talked to Legal about doing this yet and I wanted to discuss it here first.)

I'm proposing that we do this on a trial basis, perhaps until FUDCon Lawrence, so we can see if it is well received in the community and other strange issues don't come up.

A couple of further thoughts on this. I don't really see any legal issue aside from not being able to send certain items to certain places. Prepaid shipping was easy with stickers, that will be a little more complicated with things with varying weights and sizes. I'm not sure how easy it will be to deal with overseas shipments. Those are normally more involved than slap a label on it and ship it.

I'd like to gather some resources for a trial. What stock do we have that we can comfortably spare at the moment? I suspect shirts are in very low supply, stickers/case badges/pens are plentiful. If this is all we have I'm not sure pens are enough to go beyond sending in a SASE for stickers/case badges.

I don't want to deal with anything outside the US, specifically for that reason. If ambassadors in another country want to do this they can, and that ambassador is definitely not me.

I should mention that the SASE-only pilot will not support anything outside of the US either.

I think I could fit one or two pens in a first class envelope and it'd still ship.

Also, for transparency's sake, I made a request for the pilot materials here over on the private Trac. The request is for:
* 2000 laptop stickers
* 500 pens
* 500 case badges

Just removing this ticket from the meeting agenda until such time as the legal block is removed. Just add the meeting tag back when that happens please.

We need status on this ticket

I don't have the time to spearhead this anymore.

I'd still love to see something like this happen, but it won't be my doing :)
