#402 upcoming changes to ambassador mentor nomination.
Closed: Closed 6 years ago Opened 6 years ago by itamarjp.

Here are the new rules about ambassador mentor nomination, now a region (LATAM) can request new mentors for ambassadors, here are more info https://goo.gl/JDe8yO

I think we can take advantages of these new rules and choose 2 LATAM contributors to become mentors for ambassador program here.

Hello all, I want to nominate myself. I created a ticket in https://pagure.io/ambassadors-latam/tasks/issue/403

Regards

Hi team,

Even when the process is ready to go, the official page will be this: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mentors/NewMentors

Also, it's my concern that the shared document still says "Region" (I remark how this term could be confusing in the Ambassador's ML.

Also, FAmSCo advise to discuss this in regional meetings. I will prefer to discuss this in meeting before we start to nominate people, because we need to set rules for "Region" nominations, because it was briefly discussed in the last meeting but there are not formal rules, and I think we need them.

My suggestion of requirements to be a mentor:

  1. A mentor needs to be a very active ambassador (By very active I mean to have at least 2 events in the last year).
  2. A mentor needs to talk English fluently.
  3. A mentor needs to attend to at least 1 meeting per month to keep notice about what happening.
  4. A mentor needs to be involved at least in another team outside "Ambassadors"

I think a mentor needs to fit this requirements.

A mentor needs to be a very active ambassador (By very active I mean to have at least 2 events in the last year).
A mentor needs to talk English fluently.
A mentor needs to attend to at least 1 meeting per month to keep notice about what happening.
A mentor needs to be involved at least in another team outside "Ambassadors"

+1 there!
There are 2 downsides though:

1) Do we want to make someone from another team to spend more hours in ambassadors tasks (mentoring takes time)? Maybe a full time (time dedicated to Fedora) mentor would do the job better and other groups would be happy about it as well

2) What if no candidates meet the requirements? Can we afford a gap with no mentors?

I saw something in our meeting today that I wouldn't like to see again, and it's the insistence of choosing a mentor in a specific region, this is something we failed in the past and that's why the absence of the current (old) mentors. Being a mentor should be a long term commitment and we need the willing of the new mentor(s) to have the time, patience and the skills to attract more contributors to become in Ambassadors and being also a conductor to the other groups, so, my advice to anyone that wants to be a mentor, is, think about LATAM as all your 'region' and not only in your country, and be sure this new role will be a long-term role.

no, you failed in the past because of the old mentor nomination process and lack of a removal mentor process.

and now we changed that in famsco.

if the new mentor get absence after an period of time he will be inactivated and also now we can vote new mentors.

we need an Brazilian portuguese speaking mentor, to help new ambassadors that don't speak spanish or english very well.
We don't speak spanish here in Brazil.
and we are waiting almost 1 year to change the process to approve an new mentor.

Danniel Lara is an active ambassador here in Brazil and he can teach new ambassadors with his native language.

Brazil is an big country, we need an mentor here to do this job. And if he get absence (thing that he will not), we can now inactivate him and vote an new one in the worst case. But if we voted +1 for he, this is because we know him, and he is a long term Fedora ambassador.

so, we approved Danniel and Alexove yesterday, 2 new LATAM mentors. One from Peru and one from Brazil.

I saw something in our meeting today that I wouldn't like to see again, and it's the insistence of choosing a mentor in a specific region,

@echevemaster I can give you some examples, Argentina has a mentor and no contributors (less than 5 in entire country)

in Brazil is the opposite, we have contributors and no mentor's to approve them, we are growing and we need people to approve new contributors.

I don't understand why up insist in a mentor per country. That's not the way to go.

Nobody is insisting on "a mentor per country".

Yes you are, and you stated in the meeting, but you can continuing with this non-sense. Don't count on me on this.

@fredlima be consistent with your statements, is the best way to be respected in your position as Famsco member, being a leader as I know you want to be as deputy by Latam (remember this, Latam not Brazil) only it will be achieved leading by example and not be being coercive.

I don't have anything against Daniel, I know him personally and I can say he could be a great mentor, I just saying that he have to be willing to mentoring all possible ambassadors candidates in Latam and not only Brazilians, the same goes with Alex from Peru, and this was my concern yesterday.

and yes, it was decided yesterday, and anybody is complaining about it.

Answers like this one, are unacceptable.

23:23:41 <fredlima> echevemaster: you can delay how long you want, but we will make an brazilian mentor.
23:23:46 <fredlima> accept that

Remember something again, you are my representative in Famsco as well as of all of us, you are not there to impose things if so, you don't deserve the seat. May the force be with you and hoping you do it great

@echevemaster
I was on latam meeting as an fedora contributor, not as an member of something (important but temporary) like famsco.
I've done what I think is good for Fedora Project and specially for Fedora Latam.

Only I know how much I suffered to try to change the mentor process.

I did not impose anything because I don't want that and I don't have power to impose anything anyway.

Do you that famsco member can approve an new mentor?
If I want to impose something I would approve Daniel even with no Region votes.

The thing that I did was just insist with you for the voting on the meeting.

I did not insist for "+1"s, just for voting.

One last thing, I want you to know that I am very grateful for everything you have done and do for the project. I'm proud that we have people like you on our region.

I think we can close this ticket, please feel free to reopen it if it's needed
