#140 A user reported that it si possible to install JShelter to Kiwi (chromium-based) from AMO and the extension runtime is broken
Opened 8 months ago by polcak. Modified 4 months ago

Summary

We offer a separate install package for Firefox-based browsers and Chromium-based browsers. Although both versions share almost all code, there are differences.

A user reported that she installed JShelter from AMO to Kiwi (https://kiwibrowser.com). The extension looked like it works on some pages but was broken on others.

I tried to install JShelter from AMO to chromium and Brave without success.

Setup

  1. Install kiwi
  2. Go to https://addons.mozilla.org/cs/firefox/addon/javascript-restrictor/
  3. Install
  4. According to the user report, the browser should accept the extension.

Expected behavior

Kiwi is not able to install JShelter (this might actually be a bug in Kiwi. Or, JShelter detects that it is running in a wrong environment and gives a message to the user (maybe a notification, beware of the permissions, maybe a warning in the popup or a different icon).

Actual result

The extension looked like it works but was actually at least partially broken.

Reproducibility

Cannot be reproduced in chromium or brave. I have not checked kiwi.

Have you tried other steps to solve the issue?

Jshelter for chromium-based browsers works OK in Kiwi.

Additional information / notes

Kiwi is a browser for Android.

If we focus only on Kiwi, keep in mind that it currently likely does not support uptodate Mv3 support, see https://github.com/polcak/jsrestrictor/issues/211
