#44 Is Ask view important in application?
Closed 5 years ago by amitosh. Opened 6 years ago by a2batic.

A point was raised by @tangbao, in issue1. We can discuss here, how is ask view helping our application users.

Ask represents a potential source of documentation/guidance and a forum community to engage with.

I came across this problem during my user research. The possible solution to make Ask useful can be

  1. Sometimes you may not get the questions answered right away by googling them. Getting notified about the question you asked on your phone can be useful.

  2. bookmarking some good questions or similar questions and getting notified whenever they are answered.

I think the “ASK” module can be cancelled.. Suppose you meet a problem, don’t you think Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V what you meet into your browser is the fastest way to find answer? And if you want to answer some questions.. you may have to search the docs to find accurate information.. So it’s useless in this APP, at least for me. At the same time, the search box cannot work on my phone at all. I will try to find out what’s wrong this summer..

Somewhere there's a valid point in the statement above.
Pros:
We have useful data.
Cons:
We are unable to deliver the data.

Like Shilpi said, notification is a good method to engage the user in the plethora of data. Also bookmarking would be extremely beneficial.

The most important thing would be to have "search feature", "sort feature", "tags". It'd exponentially decrease the load user faces on arriving on screen. Let's think about it, why would any user open Fedora's app to view q&a? We need to provide insight over the data he'd only be exclusively receiving from Fedora's app.

This source is not exactly what we're looking for, but it's almost on very similar lines to what we're constructing, only a subset of it to summarise.

On the contrary, if it really is showing all the documentation/guidance, maybe we should rename it to "Documentation" and provide a detailed overview there?

Something like this: https://stripe.com/docs

Thoughts?

@wildflower, the ask is not FAQ, so I feel mentioning it as 'Documentation' wont help much. We can definitely add tags, sorts and bookmarks, also we can give a notification of highest voted Q/A of the day. We can also discuss more how to make it more useful.

My 2 cents on the issue

Let's try not to solve problems that don't even exist by adding so many features. In my opinion, The app is not a Q&A app. It is supposed to be an app for people to interact with Fedora community.

Those who are arguing about the very existence of feature, here are Two really interesting resources I found during my "research". The Power users really like to use the QA Forums.
- Ask Fedora: Is it working, and what's the future?
-Ask Fedora: What features / changes do we need in Askbot to make this site really work?

People are working hard to improve the existing website with features, Whatever changes we are suggesting for mobile should be consistent with the main website which again will be difficult to implement in a limited time span.

In my opinion, What we can do is show the most popular/voted questions of all time (so that people can get a crux of Ask Fedora) along with an easy access to the main Askfedora website (for the interested folks). I do believe adding a question from the mobile app should be made available for the logged in users.

I decided to break the flow into four features:
1. Search
2. Categorisation of questions into: All, latest and trending (trending covers all the questions which are being answered actively)
3. Sort by : date, votes, answers
4. Filter by tags: By name, By popularity

These features already exist on the website.

Moreover, I have added the feature to "ASK A QUESTION" as well. This in my opinion, would make the whole Q&A part more interactive and not just a reading section.

The proposed feature already exist on website. You can sort by tags: Popularity and Name.
You can sort the questions on the basis of votes, date and answers.

@wildflower, I believe the sorting is not required, as you have already added trending(vote), latest (date) tabs. Thoughts ?

Instead of trending can we have sort since this feature is already in the website?
