#518 Identify CFP themes for Flock 2025
Closed: resolved a month ago by amoloney. Opened a month ago by jflory7.

Summary

Identify a short list of 3-5 themes or key technology focuses for the Fedora community submitting content to the Flock 2025 conference CFP.

Background

It is a new year and Flock planning is already underway. Soon, we will launch the CFP process for Flock 2025, giving people a chance to share their ideas for presentations, workshops, and other interactive sessions at our annual contributor conference. The Fedora Council is well-placed to come up with themes for content that we wish to see from the Fedora community at the next Flock.

We have themes from previous years, but they are not all current with Fedora. Also, there are some notable changes for 2025:

  • Flock 2025 will be one less day than 2024, going from four days to three days.
  • The daily schedule will end one hour earlier, from 6 PM to 5 PM.
  • Day 1 and Day 2 mornings will be a single track, i.e. no other simultaneous content will be scheduled.
  • Day 1 and Day 2 afternoons will be configured for three separate breakout rooms.
  • Day 3 will be configured for the full day as three separate breakout rooms.

Details

The Council is an informed group of stakeholders who can make an ask to the Flock organizing team about what themes and key focuses they would like the CFP communications to encourage. I am asking the Council to brainstorm on new themes for Flock 2025, so these can be communicated in external comms and the upcoming CFP.

My v0.1 proposal for themes could be this. Add to it or revise it. This is some of the existing messaging we provide to Fedora Ambassadors to talk about the Fedora 2028 Strategy:

  • Find it, use it, change it: Linux accessibility (Fedora Docs, Fedora Linux, release engineering tools).
  • Be a mentor, have a mentor: Empower a culture of mentoring in Fedora and scale it.
  • Release stories: Fedora releases should have a story behind changes in each release.
  • Open collaboration: More partnership with peer communities and upstream projects.

Outcome

  • External communications can emphasize the change in themes for Flock 2025 CFP
  • CFP tool can be configured to require submitters to choose relevant themes

Following the council meeting on 15th jan 2025 that actioned @rwright to wordsmith the Flock to Fedora 2025 themes, the council decided on the following:

  • Empowering Collaboration: Tools and Practices for Fedora's Future
  • Welcoming New Voices: Pathways for Fedora Contributors
  • Driving Innovation: Fedora and Emerging Technologies

These themes are now loaded into the Flock to Fedora event in pretalx, with an expanded explanation of what each theme may cover.

The schedule blocks have also been created to match the description given in this ticket also.

Closing this ticket as I believe this can now be called done. Next steps are to announce Flock details - venue, dates, etc and pull this information into the cfp before going live before end of January 2025.
