#469 Fedora Council Hackfest 2024
Closed: resolved 3 months ago by amoloney. Opened 7 months ago by jflory7.

Summary

Organize the annual hackfest of the Fedora Council in 2024.

Background

The Fedora Council typically gets together in-person every year for one week. At these get-togethers that we call hackfests, we focus on having high-bandwidth conversations, identifying strategic next steps for Fedora, and advancing the goals of the Fedora Council. With 2024 around the corner, now is the time to start planning our next hackfest.

Tagging onto FOSDEM last year worked well because it is a major travel hub for several Fedoran folks already. There is also additional mindshare we can have at CentOS Connect and the FOSDEM Distributions Devroom. It seems like tacking a week on after FOSDEM worked well for us, so I propose that we do that again in 2024.

I have had casual "hallway track" conversations for locations so far. There are two top contenders:

  • Amsterdam, NL: Very close to Brussels. Flight or train transit is possible from Brussels. Convenient international airport hub for travelers not coming to FOSDEM. Also convenient for international departures after the hackfest. A Red Hat office is available as a possible venue for the hackfest.
  • Vienna, AT: Further away, but direct flights are available. Convenient for Red Hatters who may commute to Brno for in-person Red Hat meetings, separate from the Fedora Council hackfest. A Red Hat office is available as a possible venue for the hackfest.

A preliminary look at hotel budget for both cities shows that they are both competitive and on par with each other. I looked at hotels near the Red Hat offices in each city.

Details

First, we need to decide on location and logistics. Where do we go, who is coming, and how much budget should we prepare for? This needs to be planned urgently so we can make the budget request for next year.

Second, we need to map out the agenda and objectives for the hackfest. What do we want to accomplish? This likely ties closely to the next steps of the 2028 strategy and getting us into execution mode on the new strategy.

I suggest starting with wider discussion on Fedora Discussion and Council meetings to determine next steps.

Outcome

The Fedora Council reconvenes in early 2024 for a high-bandwidth meeting where we accomplish goals related to advancing the Fedora 2028 Strategy.

I've created a topic on Fedora Discussion for this ticket.

Please keep this ticket focused. Discuss there, and record votes and decisions here. Thanks!

Discussed in 2023-11-08 meeting.

After discussing pros/cons to the different locations, we took a straw poll and Vienna came out as the top option. We agreed to the week after FOSDEM, since the events happening before FOSDEM have many Council members pulled in different directions (e.g. CentOS Connect, CHAOSScon).

We want to follow up with @bookwar to confirm whether this option is tenable for her. Otherwise, if this looks good, I will make a first step by reserving space in the Red Hat Vienna office for us in February.
