#186 Gay Pride flag?
Closed: declined 5 years ago Opened 6 years ago by ntldr.

Hey

last year me and my boyfriend were at the Helsinki gay pride event. Since we both use linux we had an idea to make two flags for ourselves for private use not for sale or anything. One with Arch Linux logo which I already got permission to use from Arch Linux. Now we only need permission from Fedora to use their logo on gay pride flag.

Any thoughts would this be acceptable?

Can you provide an image of what you're envisioning?

Can you provide an image of what you're envisioning?

Well I am not very good with photoshop but my idea was like have standard gay pride flag with fedora logo at the left top corner or somehow little faded in the middle possible?

tomorrow comes the KKK and wants a flag with the swastika and the Fedora logo, well they have a right on their opinion do they not?

Openess and welcoming means not what happens in Fedora since a while. Political views, religious views, sexual orientation should not play any role for us, they are private things as long that is possible and should only bother us, when it comes to regulations for minorities like not serving pork to muslims and something similar.

There is a difference between a flyer with information that we are open for anybody and that includes gays and a flag. A flag is a political statement and we should stay out of it

I think Sirko raised a good point, specially in some parts of the world a flag is considered untouchable and any action with it has political consequences.
I really think Fedora should be neutral and stay away from that.
Just as example, if I see a gay flag with a logo of a company on it I would think they are in some way involved (sponsoring or whatever) in these demonstrations and we cannot control what and where the flags will appear.

@gnokii we can, as a community, tell the difference between gay rights and nazis. To suggest otherwise is ridiculous and not what we do here.

Fedora is a positive community and we are open, welcoming, and inclusive. We go beyond the legally required minimum to accommodate people. This is a huge part of what we have a Diversity Working Group for and why that group has council representation and an effect felt across our entire project.

I am not worried about the potential misuse of branded items at places outside of our control. If we limit ourselves by that worry we can never give anyone a single branded item as they may later wear it to an event or use it in a way we didn't condone. This is the risk we inherently accept everytime we show our brand (or distribute our OS which includes and svg of our logo).

As for the use of a flag. A flag can be a political statement in many parts of the world. There is validity to that. Perhaps a flag is the wrong medium for Fedora without regards to context.

@ntldr do you have other options that you would see as providing you with the ability to show your Fedora pride and Fedora's acceptance that aren't as potentially politically challenging in other cultures as a flag?

I am not sure about the answer I would give to this question, but I wanted to ask it. I also wanted you know that this issue is still being worked.

-1 to a flag. If they want to create stickers or something such as what we have done in the past with things like Fedora Women, that would be ok in my opinion, but not a flag. I agree with @robyduck and @bex

I think we're overthinking this... if this were a request to sell or hand out flags, I would understand the perspective on the politics, but this is for a one-off thing. Personally, my concern is with this Arch Linux thing — we should make sure our logo is bigger and more prominent, right? :)

There is an open design ticket for a flag design, https://pagure.io/design/issue/576 ... let's see what design's first ideas look like.

@mattdm

No, you have the wrong idea, the point is that I have arch linux flag in gay pride themed and my bf has fedora flag in same theme. But those are two different flags. Unless for whatever reason Fedora feels like they should be in same?

@bex

the whole idea was to make flags because last year when we were at the gay pride event watching people walking and having flags for different groups of gay people like "bears" - "puppy" etc we though we should make flags for our favorite OS coz why not? but if this idea get's too complicated I will just forget it and move on it's not that big of deal. My cousin's have company that can produce standard flags for countries and companies I'd ask them kindly to make two flags for me and that's it. I wouldn't be interested to sell them or make profit of.

I don't see it an issue even if it is a different Flag from arch linux :)
I am +1 for this.

@ntldr another alternative to a flag is a banner? eg a parade style banner?

Or a pennant might also work

@ntldr please update the design ticket with your input so we can move this forward.

if the flag isn't option anymore then a tshirt design would be a good idea.

how about fedora logo in gay pride themed colors? in cyan blue or such?

@ntldr can you please comment on the designs being proposed in your design ticket. That will let us bring this to a close.

something like this?

@ntldr can you post that in the design ticket you opened? https://pagure.io/design/issue/576 The design team knows our logo guidelines and can advise about if what you want it possible. I believe the overall concept is probably acceptable (my opinion), but we need design guidance here.

At this point I suggest we close this ticket and suggest closing the design ticket due to lack of response.

Right, well it's not like it matters anymore the pride walk is next week and there isn't anymore time to produce the stuff so whatever maybe next year then.
