#18 decision on reverting start.fpo change

See https://lists.fedoraproject.org/pipermail/council-discuss/2014-November/013049.html

We don't have complete project consensus, which is why the Firefox maintainer asked for a council decision. I think, though, that we do have council consensus, at least based on everyone I've heard from.

So, the proposal is:

Please revert the Firefox start page to http://start.fedoraproject.org/. Future improvements for usability or other enhancements can be made for the F22 timeframe or beyond, taking both user experience design and other Fedora stakeholders like marketing and outreach into account.

Since F21 has already shipped, the urgency has decreased, but assuming this passes, let's get it reset for the next update for for F22 by default in absence of another plan. I'm proposing this as a lazy approval decision (see [http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Council#Making_Decisions Making Decisions], and since the holidays are upon us, let's make the timeframe for votes be the rest of December.

For the record, I am +1 to this. :)

Not that I'm on the council, but I figured I could ask. If the original intent was to have something that works when there is limited or no network access (or any situation where start.fp.o is unreachable), it is not possible to have a fancier local landing page which uses javascript magic to fetch content from start.fp.o but still show something if that's not possible?

Not that I possess any ability to actually create this, but I thought it was worth tossing out there.

+1 with my auxiliary seat hat on - it would be nice to have Change for upcoming work on start page as it requires more coordination/commitment. As part of decision, I'd like to request it for F22 (just in case some plan will be agreed on).

+1 Also, ack the "fancy local version when not connected," which, I thought, used to exist, but this is a matter for ML.

Okay, so I guess we have complete agreement of the current council. So I'm marking this as resolved and will forward the resolution to the firefox bug. Thanks everyone!

It's been a while since this ticket was closed, but in firefox.git I still see:

{{{
firefox-redhat-default-prefs.js:pref("browser.startup.homepage", "data:text/plain,browser.startup.homepage=about:newtab");
}}}

The inference I'm drawing from the latest comments in bz1157682 is that the maintainer is waiting for the council to concede to design considerations from the upstream GNOME UX expert; either by continuing to use about:newtab as default homepage, or using about:newtab along with an offer to enroll in Fedora Magazine emails, or... something else.

Martin is in the unfair position here of being "caught in the middle" of a disagreement that at this point should be decided with the solution in effect. This has an impact beyond the GNOME experience, and especially with a clear leadership decision, has moved outside the scope of a GNOME design discussion. Council, please show some teeth and enforce your ruling.

<nod>, I suppose it's worth re-opening this, to explore options on how to help getting the council decision implemented in a timely manner.

Looking at the respective bug, it seems there has been quite some recent conversation and discussion on this. Perhaps it would be worthwhile for the Council to read the latest comments there before we revisit.

Taking a step back from this, there are a couple issues that I see.

1) This was originally an issue for the F21 release, but it was too late. So this ticket was to revert back to start.fp.org in rawhide "in the absence of another plan". I think it's fair to say discussion was on-going, but there was no concrete other plan at the time of the decision. I don't think the request to revert was out of line, particularly since it isn't a set in stone change. That does lead to...

2) Perhaps we should have held off on the decision given it wasn't immediately important. We did discuss this on the list, where it got fairly good support. We also briefly discussed in this ticket, but those discussions didn't involve the people actually working on the change. Which points to a bit of...

3) Communication issues. I'm not 100% convinced that we'd be in a different place than now had Allan been in the list discussions, but as a matter of process we should have pinged him directly. For whatever reason we didn't. So we have a long bugzilla discussion with only 2 people in it. I think this is something we can learn from.

Now, all that being said, we still need to come to a resolution here. I believe the revert was made yesterday, but we need to decide if that is the final solution we'd like for F22. Council members, please review the ticket and let's see if we can reach a common ground on what the default start page should be for Fedora.
