#517 "Brevity is Beautiful" - Badge for shortest lifespan of package/app in Fedora
Closed: declined 4 years ago by riecatnor. Opened 7 years ago by duffy.

Badge description (like "You added a co-maintainer to a package. BFF!"):

Your package had the shortest shelf life of all Fedora packages.

Help the badges team understand what this idea is all about. If this badge is awarded for certain kinds of activities:
1) What are those activities?

Packaging an application and then retiring it shortly afterward. For someone to do such an action means they are willing to put aside work they had done for the greater good of Fedora, as well as that they are open to considering others' opinions and taking them seriously.

2) Who is doing them (are they packagers? translators? newcomers? veterans? users? sponsors?)

A packager

3) Why are they doing them (is this a means to a different end?)

They packaged a tool, and then learned that maybe it wasn't the best idea for Fedora and decided to pull it after an open and frank discussion. This makes Fedora better.

4) When do they do them (every day? once a year?)

This is more like a once-in-a-lifetime kind of thing, although if anybody retires another package more quickly they may earn it as well.

5) How do they do them (by talking in IRC? by running commands in the console? by using a web interface?)

I think there's packaging infrastructure that handles this but I'm not sure.

Lastly, do you have any ideas for artwork concepts?

A supermarket shelf showing gallons of milk lined up. It's a positive badge so no stink lines. Foods that have a short shelf life have short shelf lives because they need to be consumed fresh!

How about this?

The one additional thought is a stamp of some sort over the top of everything (maybe saying something like "fresh" in a circle or something. Feedback appreciated.

Something like this:

I don't think this is totally correct yet.

Not this either (like the rows more).

Also, any tutorials on perspective shifting in inkscape?

@kylerconway, thanks for the work here! I have a few ideas to help make this badge really successful. I see you tried a lot of milk jugs, and just one.. what about somewhere in between? Play around with the amount of jugs. I am thinking about three across, and a hint of the tops and bottoms of the others.

I like how you are using objects to create the shape of the jug, but I would like to see a version with a stroke around the whole object. Try a version where the cap is maybe a dark blue?

I do not think the perspective shifting is working for this "fresh" logo. I actually think the concept will come across without the "fresh" entirely. So once you get a new composition going, feel free to try a version with, but I would also like to see versions without.

Lastly, for the colored ring and background, please use the development category (orange outer ring) and packaging background color (yellow). See this badge for an example: https://badges.fedoraproject.org/badge/phoenix-down

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with :)

@riecatnor -- any updates I should make to this one?

@kylerconway getting closer! Bump up the outlines on the milk jugs and give the inside object a bit more contrast. Maybe try a version where the jugs are a bit closer together. What do you think of the yellow behind these milk jugs? I am not sure the colour is working for this? You could try some grey gradients, like the inside of the fridge at the store :)
